I may get this, but primarily as a 4K blu-ray player.
It does SACD/dvd-a, but unfortunately has no analogue outputs.

The new Sony universal 4K player with analogue audio outs is the UBP-X1000ES.

The UBP-X800 will essentially be a digital transport. Not sure what SQ differences can be expected over similar digital transports in this price range.

With many new features not available on any other digital transport

Not massively impressed by the relative lack of socketry on the back of the 1000ES model, think I'll be sticking with the 752BD for a good while yet...!

What are the "many new features" that the UBP-X800 has over other new players? What will those features mean in relation to the SQ of the UBP-X800?

If the 800 has no rca outs then how can it claim hi res audio? I don't know much about this stuff so I apologize in advance if I asked a dumb question.

    Jerry,

    Hi-res is output via HDMI.

The benefit of HDMI is only one lead for surround sound whereby SACD sounds best.

    • More flexibility when it comes to HDR (strip metadata, etc.) <--this can be extremely important! Otherwise you can end up with a rotten UHD image.
    • HDMI input
    • Rear USB inputs
    • Likely better support for network streaming (situation dependent)
    • More aspect ratio support for DVD/Blu-ray
    • etc.

    What are the complaints?

I have heard nothing but praise on-line and every professional review gave it five stars.

We're all well aware that a benefit of HDMI is that it is a one cable connection. No breaking news there ;). As far as HDMI for surround SACDs sounding best is not an absolute. Depending on the player with 7.1 analog outputs such as the Oppo 105/105D analog can sound better especially if the AVR with HDMI is lacking.
The 203 has had some issues by reading through the 203 thread at AVS. With Oppo's track record I'm sure they'll get whatever issues that are still there corrected.

Yes but I think that is more likely due to differences in DACs and volume-control processing than to HDMI, per se.

I agree. I was just pointing out that the OP's assertion that HDMI is superior is not an absolute.

Indeed, I have a very old, pre HDMI, surround sound system comprising of an Arcam DV137, AVR 300 and Dali Ikon 5 speakers and everyone (well those that do comment) who visits comments on how wonderful it sounds in stereo and surround.

Why not? While we pander about elusive differentials (some of which are real), there are many ways to have decent sound.

Sorry I don't understand. Why not what? That was just an example of a non HDMI multichannel system.

He seemed somewhat apologetic about the age and modesty of his system despite the approval of others and his own implied satisfaction. I was saying that there is no need to be apologetic.
