I disagree totally. There really are some things that just can't be covered. Some shouldn't be covered because of the subject matter and some shouldn't be because the vocalist is very specific and the lyric was shaped specifically for his tone and phrasing. Rethinking tunes such as this would rob the listener of what he or she expects of it.

Just having a chat with a Stevie Ray Vaughn fan. It drifted into the "Stevie's better than Jimi" zone. I told him that Stevie may have been able to replicate Voodoo Child with great success, but even HE stayed away from MACHINE GUN!;)

She Loves You must be among the least-covered most-famous songs.

That's what I was thinking while I wrote this question. But you see, at least 5 bands covered that track. Shame. lol

I did a cover of 'Oh Yoko' four years ago and recorded several vocal takes, including a substitution name to 'Yoko' in the chorus. Indeed it didn't work well.

There's so much rock snobbery when people say 'No one is allowed to cover this!' that it's almost funny. It's a song. That's it.

It's such an odd attitude when it's such a huge part of how jazz exists.

It is also a huge part of how pop and rock music have worked. It makes no sense.

Rolf Harris covered Stairway To Heaven didn't he?
I thought it was a staple of amateur bands' sets for ages so it may have become a cliché pretty rapidly. It's now 35 years old so there's a lot of t9me during which it was probably played quite a bit.
Strikes me as about as unlikely taht nobody would be ploaying it as Smoke On The Water or something. Could just be taht the people who would be covering it are getting too old to be gigging much but still.

Didn't Ciccone Youth include a sped up 'hardcore version' on The Whitey Album ?
remember there being some Sonic Youth related joke based on it and thought it made it to record

The two covers I've heard of "Tomorrow Never Knows"(Phil Collins ; Danielle Dax) are quite awful.
The both slow down the beat, and it loses it's 'cool'.

  18. I have never heard of a band covering Focus's Hocus Pocus. How do you cover a song that has incredible guitar, yodeling and whisteling? Anyone have a video of someone trying?

Karn Evil 9, if only for 2nd Impression, would be insane to just cover in a live performance setting. Hell, even ELP themselves could barely handle it, as evidenced by all the tempo fluctuations during the performance of 2nd Impression on their live album (Welcome Back My Friends...).

Here's a version by an Indian singer with Indian instruments that I think works wonderfully well:

I saw a 17 year old kid do a pretty credible version of it.

Speakin' of Yoko, I recently saw the old classic Rolling Stones Circus film and it was awesome! Jethro Tull, the Who and the Stones, Then there was the Plastic mac band, I saw Eric Clapton, John Lennon, Mitch Mitchell and Keith Richards jamming along pretty well, that was ok until a classic violinist started to try to jam to the rock beat, and to make matters worse, Yoko came out squeeking Peaaachh, lovvve, and other non sense, At one point I could have sweared I saw the musicians playing, "wince" in pain. LOL!
