About 4 months ago we began digging deep into the music of 1971. From forum favorites to obscure artists from many different genres. We began with 575 songs released in 1971 and concluded this weekend with the Top 25.

I had a blast doing this and hope everyone enjoyed the trip back to 1971. I encourage everyone to post your personal Top 25 lists for 1971 and/or comment on this list. 1977 won the vote for the next year we will explore. Below are links to previous years we have done. I was surprised with how much I agreed with the final list. My personal list would have been pretty similar, except a few artists would have more songs higher up (The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Yes). Thanks for making all this happen.

Great job and a lot of work. What a year! Seven songs from Who's Next ...and then "Let's See Action", which I'm unfamiliar with. Just looked on wiki and see it was a single released in the U.K.

My eyes got tired (!), so I might be off, but this is what I tallied:
    The Who - 8 songs
    The Rolling Stones - 8
    Led Zeppelin - 7
    R. Stewart/Faces - 7
    Yes - 6
    The Doors - 5
    Carole King - 5
    David Bowie - 5
    P. McCartney - 5
    J. Lennon - 5
    Jethro Tull - 5

I think those are the top but didn't count every artist (Carpenters had 4, by the way). So 66 of the 200 songs (exactly 1/3) accounted for by eleven acts).

As for omissions for me personally, if I take myself back to 1971 when I was 12/13 yrs old, I'm certain I would have included at least one Grand Funk Railroad song in my Top 25. And something from Uriah Heep.

All these years later? The Grand Funk contenders would have been Country Road or Comfort Me, both from Survival. And no, they wouldn't come close to cracking the Top 25 now. On the other hand, Uriah Heep "Look at Yourself " or "July Morning" (both from Look at Yourself) might get in even now. Probably just one as the competition is incredible.

That isn't nearly as surprising as Ringo coming in at #13.

    As far as 45's go, in my collection from this Top 200 are #1 (as you can guess, it was edited way down - which B.T.W., is how I like it), 3, 4, 6 / 54, 8, 9 / 122, 10, 13, 14, 26, 27, 30 - 32, 35, 36 / 78, 38, 39, 44, 45, 48, 50, 51, 53, 55, 60, 61, 64, 65, 68, 70, 80, 82, 86, 88, 91, 93, 97, 98, 101, 102, 105, 115, 117 (though I don't play it - it's a CBS Pitman pressing), 118, 126 (likewise CBS Pitman, not played), 127, 129, 130, 134, 137, 143, 145, 147, 162 (another "non-play" from CBS Pitman), 163, 164, 166, 168, 171, 175, 178 (with string overdubs, from 1974), 183 - 186, 189, 190, 196 and 197. Y'all can figure out from there the percentage from this list.

I see now that this is on the list. I would replace this with: "Thin Line Between Love And Hate" by The Persuaders or perhaps "Footstompin' Music" or "Upsetter" by Grand Funk Railroad from the album E Pluribus Funk since as mentioned earlier there were no GFR songs voted onto the 1971 list.

That was a great year for music.....and there wasn't anything released by Bob Dylan or Neil Young!
