LOVE Melvin . I've had the pleasure of seeing him (and speaking with him) live at Rosa's in Chicago (he used to live in an apartment above the club) many times in the early 2000s. He's really a nice and approachable guy.
The Buddy Guy/Junior Wells tracks from that soundtrack are EPIC, especially "The First Time I Met The Blues", which I consider to be the definitive version from Buddy. I just wish we had the full film of all of these songs for our enjoyment! The documentary itself is nice but the songs are incomplete in many cases and half of the album isn't featured in the movie at all!
The story I'd always heard was Buddy and Junior were picked up at the airport and whisked over to Rose & Kelly's nightclub (most likely) for the filming/recording. They had just come off tour opening for the Rolling Stones (in 1970) and were primed and ready to go! I think it show and to me, lends creedence to this story. Here's some footage of Buddy's performance (which is unfortunately edited). The whole thing runs over 6 minutes.
I honestly don't believe that the electric blues can get any better than that!!! For me it is the pinnacle.
