I like the Free Live but I am not really a fan of ending the album with Get Where I Belong after the great version of The Hunter. Personally, I would add Get Where I Belong to the Highway album to improve it and then make Free Live a completely live album.

In addition, I had always hoped they would release a 2 cd version of the album with one version of each track played at the shows. The reissued version added some bonus tracks but also repeated some of the tracks already on the album and added a studio alternate version of Get Where I Belong. The Songs Of Yesterday box set contained a complete disc of live Free but still managed to leave off some of the tracks recorded at the shows.

Here is the track listing for the Free Live cd reissue with bonus tracks.

    1. "All Right Now" – 6:24
    2. "I'm a Mover" – 3:46
    3. "Be My Friend" – 5:56
    4. "Fire and Water" – 3:56
    5. "Ride on a Pony" – 4:30
    6. "Mr. Big" – 6:13
    7. "The Hunter" – 5:29
    8. "Get Where I Belong" – 4:19
    9. "Woman" - 4:32
    10. "Walk In My Shadow" - 4:15"
    11. Moonshine" - 9:08
    12. "Trouble on Double Time" - 3:57
    13. "Mr Big" (Alternative Take) - 5:26
    14. "All Right Now" (Alternative Take) - 4:43
    15. "Get Where I Belong" (Alternative Take) - 4:22
Here is a list of the tracks on live disc that was part of the Songs of Yesterday box set.

    4-1 – Ride On A Pony 5:33
    4-2 – Be My Friend 6:17
    4-3 – Fire And Water 4:02
    4-4 – The Stealer 3:53
    4-5 – Don't Say You Love Me 5:56
    4-6 – Mr.Big 6:27
    4-7 – I'll Be Creepin' 4:33
    4-8 – Free Me 6:39
    4-9 – Woman 4:19
    4-10 – I'm A Mover 3:44
    4-11 – Walk In My Shadow 4:18
    4-12 – Songs Of Yesterday 5:09
    4-13 – All Right Now 7:30
    4-14 – Crossroads* 6:37

The original album was about 40 minutes and removing Get Where I Belong would make it about 36 minutes. This would allow approximately 43 minutes of bonus tracks for a disc.

I was was interested in how forum members might improve/expand the album to either 1 lp or 1 disc, your choice using the above tracks.

I would improve it by keeping the guitar amp from shorting out during "All Right Now."

  3. However it's configured "Woman" MUST be on it.

The cover of Crossroads is sort of a rarity because they did not record a studio version of it. I am somewhat surprised that it was not included on the original album since it was a song that had not appeared elsewhere when the album was released.

It is interesting to note that no tracks from the Free album (My second favorite.) were included on the original lp release.

I like the reissue bonus track versions of Trouble On Double Time and Walk In My Shadows and would probably include them.

Any other thoughts on the outtakes or possible combinations of tracks?

If the base premise is that Get Where I Belong gets the heave ho, I'd insert Walking in Your Shadow right before The Hunter (so The Hunter is the finale for the concert).

If there's room for another track, I'd insert Trouble on Double Time .

Any other outtakes that you like that could possibly be added to a cd version with bonus tracks?

I really love Don't Say You Love Me, which would probably be a good add to bring things down a bit. Also, really highlights Paul Rodgers' fantastic vocals (man, that guy can sing).

I'll Be Creepin'? Have to think about that one. Maybe a bit too similar to some of the others?

I actually might swap out Crossroads for Ride On Pony because it is a rarity.

I really like the song I'll Be Creepin'. I also dig Woman and The Stealer quite a bit.

I'm listening to Don't Say You Love Me right now. Yes, this MUST be included!

I'm with you on The Stealer. Just don't want to bludgeon the audience too much! (What a fantastic band. Listening to Crossroads right now.)

It's too bad a version of Heavy Load wasn't recorded. I like that one.

I'm A Mover is another popular track that was recorded and not included.

Yeah, but I think maybe too similar to Ride on a Pony? (Except in your version you've gotten rid of Pony, so it would work for you.) I'd have to think about which one to keep. I really like Ride on a Pony....so???? I don't know! :D

That's why I think they should release a 2 cd set with a version of every song played at the shows.

I thought that I also recalled reading that Remember was also played once at these shows. The tape or recording might have been bad.

My version would come to 60:47, two discs.
    1) All Right Now
    2) I'm a Mover
    3) Be My Friend
    4) Fire and Water
    5) I'll Be Creepin'
    6) Trouble on Double Time
    7) Ride On Pony
    8) Mr. Big
    9) The Stealer
    10) Don't Say You Love Me
    11) Walk in My Shadow
    12) Crossroads
    13) The Hunter

This doesn't include anything from Free at Last (as I don't see anything available). Heartbreaker is the only thing Live from "Heartbreaker album", but doesn't include Fraser so doesn't seem right to include it.

I think this would be a fantastic 2-CD set. One hour would keep me riveted.

The US version had the studio "My Brother Jake" at the end of side 1. The two studio tracks never bothered me. Love both of them!

Instead of expanding Free Live!, I'd rather they just released unedited "Live in Croydon" and "Live in Sunderland" CDs.

The studio tracks are fine. I just think they kill the vibe especially after The Hunter. I am not really a fan of mixing live and studio tracks unless all of the studio tracks are one on lp or side of an lp together.

Releasing both shows would be nice.

They should also release the Isle Of Wight show and perhaps Portsmouth 1972 if they have the complete show. The live version of Heartbreaker was recorded at Portsmouth.

The live vault material was one of the reasons many people were hoping that the Free From The Shadows - The Complete Island Years box set would be released
