We all agree that buying a studio recorded album of a certain band is one thing and buying a "greatest hits" or "best of" is something else.
Name at least 3 bands you´ll be content with their greatest hits release.
    Mine are:
    1- Genesis
    2- Chicago
    3- Allman Brothers Band
    4- Grateful Dead
    5- Lynard Skynard

I only buy compilations from bands I like. If I don't like a group enough to get myself at least one complete album of theirs, I don't bother with their "greatest hits"/"best of" either.

I used to think greatest hits were the way to go for some bands, but I started to collect records 3 Mos ago and realized, it's a lot more fun to experience a band an album at a time.. very rewarding musical experience that way

There are quite a few but off the top of my head:

    Manfred Mann
The Small Faces (yes I have heard Ogdens but the compilation is sufficient for me)
    The Killers

To each his own. Respectfully, I will say, you will miss a heck of a lot of good/great music if you only go for these bands greatest hits.

Yes, I would contend that Genesis Greatest Hits set represents their least interesting music. Grateful Dead are hard to represent through any kind of studio collection but that is an entire thread of its own.

But, as you say, to each his own. Like the OP I too only have a Lynyrd Skynyrd comp, albeit a lengthy 2 disc set. Emerson, Lake & Palmer similarly.

  14. To expand on my response to this quote, there is a definite and wide ranging merit to many a GH compilation and I own a bunch. I have them mostly for travel, where music often turns into a soundtrack or background to mobile activity and the convenience of turning someone on to a band they have never explored, but never have I owned only greatest hits packages of any artist.

Interesting topic. I think most people who buy the greatest hits wouldn't know the catalog so how could they judge if the greatest hits was the best and only music they needed from that band?

For example my favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd is songs from the earliest years like Junkie, almost like a stripped down mean guitar sound - like sweet home Alabama, but just a single guitar and bass and drums. If I only bought the greatest hits, how would I even know about this song?
