The one about his uncle was interesting (The priest)
And Swimming to Cambodia was very interesting too.

BTW, a little trivia: Charlies Napier was in every Demme film while he was alive

    Very sad to hear this.

    Great director.

    RIP Jonathon....

  6. I heard this in the morning driving into work. Damn. A fine film director who broke many of the conventions of filmmaking from his very first film including creating a horror thriller (Silence of The Lambs) later in his career that actually won Best Picture, creating a remake that was as good as the original (The Manchurian Candidate). Demme had his successes and failures along the way but I never sensed that he compromised on his films once he had control. A super talented film director RIP.

I think alexpop is referring to Silence of the Lambs, but I'm not sure.

Very sorry to hear this. RIP, Mr. Demme.

One of the greatest concert films of all time.

I met Jonathan at Massey Hall in Toronto in May 2011 where he was filming the 2 Neil Young concerts that make up the film "Journeys".
We were talking about how the loud and boisterous crowd had ruined part of the filming for night 1.
He was filming right in front of me on the left side of the floor and he came and spoke to me after the concert because he heard me telling off some loudmouths around me that had spoiled some of the show.
He was really cool; we talked about a few of his films that I loved and the Neil show that night. I was honoured to have met him.

RIP to a classy and talented guy.

And by the way "Ricki & The Flash" was a really good little film (IMO) Meryl Streep was great in it and it was lots of fun.
It's nowhere near the failure that some have made it seem. It was a humourous and warm 'rock and roll' film to be enjoyed and not taken too seriously.

He was also passionate about the people of Haiti, he released a wonderful compilation of music "Konbit the burning rhythms of Haiti", The proceeds went to The Haitian water project. I worked with Jonathan on the Neville Brothers track as well as compiling the entire record at Sigma Sound NYC. What a gifted man and a pleasure to be around. Condolences to all who called him a friend. Various Artists - Konbit: Burning Rhythms of Haiti - Amazon.com Music

The Silence of the Lambs was a phenomenon in 1991. People from all walks of life were talking about it. One of those rare films that has "word on the street" quality to it. Like Alien did in 1979.

    His Masterpiece :righton:

Citizen Band, Melvin and Howard, Silence of the Lambs, Swimming to Cambodia, would have love to have seen his version of Swing Shift.
Cousin Bobby was interesting. I liked Philadelphia
But, yes, Stop Making Sense is the greatest rock concert film....better than The Last Waltz......

I love how you could always tell one of his early dramatic films - something was quirky about them, actors that you would hardly see anywhere else would pop up in his films, like Chris Isaak. Big fan of Married To The Mob, Something Wild and Stop Making Sense. RIP.

I wonder if Demme's cut of Swingshift, considered by many to be the great lost film of the '80s, will ever get an official release?

    Very sad news :(

Just a few days ago I was watching a new doc about Roger Corman that Sky Arts here in the UK screened. It was very good. Anyway, Demme featured quite a bit as, in case you didn't know, he started off (like many of the directors of the 70's onwards) working for Corman who gave him his first jobs. I think they called it the Corman school.

David Byrne sent out a nice tribute to him yesterday. apparently, Demme was really getting hammered by the studio (and Goldie?) over the cut of Swing Shift while he was shooting SMS. But Byrne says he rarely showed any stress during the shoot and was very attentive to the band not just during the shoot, but later in the editing, cutting, and audio phases.
