Paul Thomas Anderson and Jonathan Demme (RIP) used pop music in their movies perfectly.

One of my favorites would be The Last American Virgin soundtrack if only for "Teen Angel Eyes" - Tommy Tutone...IF anyone compiles a TT greatest hits disc I would hope that they would include that tune...

Music from the film 'IF' , a masterstroke to use the 'Sanctus' from 'Missa Luba' and then use Parry's 'Jerusalem' in the final section of the movie.
but.......was there actually a soundtrack album released?
There was certainly a soundtrack release for 'Oh Lucky man' 'cos I own a copy ,and very wonderful it is too!

'Jazz on a Summers Day' one of the great musical documentaries , the music is wonderful and the cinematography is stunning but for me the audience shots
are the highlight .......beautifully dressed cool hipsters !

'High Society' great movie ,funny ,romantic, entertaining and a soundtrack for the ages ..................'now you has Mister Barret Deems........' Who wants to wallow in champagne?' ' Iiii dooont.'

'Elvis, the Comeback special' Elvis comes back to the real world and reclaims his throne as the King of Rock and Roll after years of making movies for the ladies and adds to his fan base by dressing in homoerotic leather gear that somehow snares us all into loving him ......we finally found out why our older brothers had bought those out take albums when Elvis was in the army.

As far as samplings of songs, I really like Goodfellas and Guardians of the Galaxy. For original scores I'll go with The Good, the Bad, and The Ugly, with Taxi Driver as an honorable mention.

Purely '60s for me: toss up; between early Bond (You Only Live Twice...because I like John Barry) or 2001. I just think the particular arrangement for a Classical work called THE BLUE DANUBE associated with the movie 2001, cut for the record by a German conductor named Karl Boehm, IS the BEST all-round recording of that piece...and it wasn't even the same performance used in the *actual* film(!).
