Like Pop and Achtung very much, but along both of your lines I would say the same about Zooropa.

My favorite album by Aerosmith is Get Your Wings, rather than Toys in the Attic or Rocks. :)

Self Portrait, and especially Another Self Portrait, over Blonde On Blonde

Of course Blonde On Blonde is a work of genius, and I love hearing its construction on The Cutting Edge, but I play the Self Portrait sessions more frequently and derive more pleasure from them.

Similarly, Saved over Slow Train Coming, Shot Of Love over Infidels, and Down In The Groove over Time Out Of Mind.

Load gets unfairly trashed in my opinion.

"So Far, So Good, So What" is a rather overlooked album in my opinion. "Hook In Mouth" is possibly my favorite song by them. The only negative thing I can say about it is that I didn't like the Sex Pistols cover they did. Other then that the album is fantastic.

Oh, I don't think you are right. Most people would say Blue or Court and Spark before Hejira. Way more.

And not just on SHF, which may be the crowd you are referring to?

Of course, but how many of these are the true knowledgable lifelong fans, or are they more of the casual listener. I have no way of knowing. Maybe check out either the JM facebook group or the official JM website.

I get the idea but I think it will lead to more pointless comparisons that invite judgementalism.

Why not my favourite album is X? :)

I think in most cases my tastes are at least somewhat typical, especially for the devoted vs. casual fan---that is, I won't make a big deal out of preferring RUST NEVER SLEEPS to HARVEST....

But in a few cases my tastes are peculiar, for example value LOVESEXY above either Purple Rain OR Sign o the Times.

With Elvis Costello, value KING OF AMERICA over anything from 77-80. (IMPERIAL BEDROOM too I prefer to the early years which I thought used to be a common thing but seems less so now.)

My fave Lou Reed solo is NEW SENSATIONS over either TRANFORMER or a Lou hipster choice like BLUE MASK.

I think SOUTHERN ACCENTS is the only classic start to finish Tom Petty record.

Prefer PERFECT STRANGERS to MACHINE HEAD

Some of the choices made in this thread would be odd in the wide world but are only very slightly esoteric at SHF. For example, Blue may well be streets ahead for people who have only heard a little Joni Mitchell, but Hissing, Hejira, even Mingus would not count as a bold contrarian stand amongst her fans. Similarly, there are so many valid picks for Prince that it would almost be more surprising to hear someone choose Purple Rain as their favourite.

That said, for Frankie I prefer Liverpool to Pleasuredome.
