1.Pretzel Logic 2.Katy Lied 3.Countdown To Ecstasy 4.Aja 5.Gaucho 6.Can't Buy A Thrill 7.The Royal Scam
My favourite band of all time from the moment I heard them back in 72-3. So... 1. Cant' Buy A Thrill, Countdown to Ecstasy, Pretzel Logic 2. Royal Scam, Aja 3. Katy Lied, Gaucho Really can't separate the first three - played them endlessly for years. CTE has two of the most overlooked songs in their catalogue in "Razor Boy" and "The Boston Rag" Royal Scam has a couple on there I could live without - The Fez, Green Earrings - and it really does miss "Here at the Western World" Not a fan of Katy - too many songs with average lyrics and the Your Gold Teeth isn't a patch on the first one.
Do you work in advertising by any chance? You put a really smooth spin on things. The 'overall zeitgeist' is that it's weakened by too much average material.
1 - Can't Buy A Thrill/Countdown to Ecstasy/Pretzel Logic/The Royal Scam. That's all. The rest never grabbed me as much as those.
The OP doesn't state any criteria for ranking so I'll go with my favorites which is an emotional thing. Katy Lied Pretzel Logic Aja (the best, but not my favorite) Royal Scam (every time I listen to this one I enjoy more than I expect to) Can't Buy A Thrill, Countdown To Ecstasy, and Goucho are tied. Haven't paid attention to Steely Dan albums that followed. Just for the heck of it, Morph The Cat is my favorite Donald Fagen album.
Well somebody's got to be the voice of reason here and put The Royal Scam in its proper place: 1. The Royal Scam 2. Aja 3. Katy Lied 4. Gaucho 5. Countdown to Ecstasy 6. Pretzel Logic 7. Can't Buy A Thrill Not sure where I'd rank 2vN and EMG in there, so I stuck with the Magnificent Seven. Fagen solo: 1. The Nightfly 2. Morph the Cat 3. Kamakiriad 4. Sunken Condos (will always rank last for me) Becker solo: 1. Circus Monkey 2. 11 Tracks of Whack
Royal Scam is their most guitar driven album....which sets it apart from the others a bit....But how does one rank such music? Very hard.
To hard to rank the others but Pretzel Logic is my fave. ...and I'm ready to see what Donald is gonna be doing on this Nightflyers tour.
Can't Buy a Thrill (for me). I just like the songs better than the newer more sickly produced ones. They are all good though and worth owning, lots of classic songs, Two Against Nature is my least favorite. Have not heard Everything Must Go.
Royal Scam AJA Countdown Pretzel Logic 3-way tie between Katy Lied, Gaucho and CBAT Two Against Nature Everything Must Go kick off your high heel sneakers, it's party time...
The Royal Scam is my favorite album of all time, so it's ranked number one here ! 2 Aja and Katy Lied. 3 Gaucho and The Pretzel Logic. 4 The rest.
It's fun to see people's opinions. I think the band's output one of the more eclectic in pop and only The '70s could've produced that band. Easy for me: Best: "The Royal Scam" Weakest: One of the newer; but of the first run, it's gotta be "Gaucho", and I LOVE "Glamour Profession" and "Hey Nineteen".
1 Aja 2 The royal scam 3 Gaucho 4 Can't buy a thrill 5 two against nature 6 pretzel logic 7 Countdown to ecstasy 8 Katy lied 9 Everything must go
Scam Pretzel Aja Katy Countdown Two Against Nature Gaucho Everything must Go Thrill But they're all close ... including the Fagen albums ... although Kamakiriad is my least favorite
