I have only dabbled in d/l but I have Mirosalv Vitous Group (eponymous album) on ECM that I think I got from HDTracks a few years ago. Fantastic album and excellent sound as one expects frm that label.
I've not heard these performances and I really enjoy Debussy's solo piano music so I'm very happy interested in this. NP Joe Henderson - Double Rainbow (Verve) promo lp Not sure this got a standard release on vinyl. I was surprised to come across this used.
As I said in my previous post I didn't want the CD. I was expecting to have to pay more for the RSD vinyl box and possibly a premium on top of that due to the high demand for this product in Japan and the fact that only 250 copies were released for sale here. It transpired that the Disk Union Tokyo Jazz superstore didn't even have any for sale on RSD and I found one at their rock outlet nearby. It's possible they are holding them back for the Golden Week holidays starting this Wednesday but I doubt it, since there has been no pre-publicity around this item. So it was a question of stump up the money or go without. As far as pressing more copies goes, well that requires fine judgement. Monk is a big ticket but it's still jazz and thus a niche market so they probably under-produce and hope they will sell out. If they don't make money they go out of business and then we end up with the same thing only produced and sold by the big boys and with less care taken and even more emphasis on the bottom line. You get what you pay for. I paid a premium but I got a premium product. The packaging is of a high standard, the booklet is very well put together, with contributions by people who know their Monk and top quality vinyl in excellent sound. At $70 I'd consider the RSD box a bargain. $18 is a great price for those who want a no-frills CD. I wanted the box and I have no complaints. I don't think the comparison to coffee table books is a good analogy. If you can buy a photo book so cheaply who on earth is going to pay $200 for the same thing with a record thrown in? No-one. Which may explain why I haven't seen anything remotely like that offered for sale on RSD, at least as far as jazz product is concerned. I share your concern for price gouging and 'flipping'. I rarely buy new unless I have to. Luckily I can take my pick of immaculate used product where I live. The Monk box was one of those rare occasions where I bit the bullet and coughed up the readies,- after all, it's new Monk and Wilen and not just another SACD or mono master of stuff we've heard a million times before. That's something that has to be taken into consideration. Would I pay that kind of money for a padded-out box set of Brilliant Corners with a puff-piece by Ashley Kahn and a few photos of Monk getting mad at Oscar Pettiford? Not on your Nellie (pun intended)!
Parents are here visiting from NC and having a chill Sunday morning at home playing with the kids and listening: WP- The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds (Analogue Productions, Stereo, 33.33333333...4) NP - The Cars (MoFi SACD)
I thought the ltd. ed. set came with a large (lp size) book as well. It was more than merely stamping "Limited Edition" on the cover and charging more. For people who enjoy looking and reading the book, I wuld think the lp version would be preferred over a cd size booklet. It's aimed at the collector not someone who merely wants the music. People who want the collector's edition will spend the money, those who only want the music will buy the single cover version of the vinyl set or the cd. The label is offering three ways to get the music. That's much better than offering the ltd. ed. version only imho.
NP Fredde Hubbard - The Hub Of Hubbard (MPS) red label Playing with Freddie on this one? Eddie Daniels - ts Richard Davis - b Roland Hanna - p Louis Hayes - d From 1972.
If the booklet were sold as a stand-alone item in a specialist bookstore expect to pay at least $25, that's the standard we are talking about. My box came with about half a dozen postcard-sized colour photos that you could stick in a frame and put on your wall. Not sure if this is one of those 'Japan only' extras but there is no mention of these on the hype sticker.
MPS pressings, or at least the ones I've heard, always sound great. I have the CD, it got reissued about 10 years ago I think. What do you think of the sound (equipment, ears, and listening conditions notwithstanding)?
That was one of my earlier SACD purchases. I've had the pleasure of watching her perform a few times, terrific player. NP back to Joe..... Joe Henderson, Charlie Haden and Al Foster live at the Genova Jazz Festival in 1987, An Evening Wth...on the Italian Red label.
Yes, agreed. Books are expensive to put together these days, especially when photographs are involved. It's an old complaint but cd booklets are stupid. They don't serve the art well and they don't serve the reader with the print size. As one who enjoys the visual side of recordings I will almost always plump for the lp over a cd.
It's very good sounding imo, especially considering those things you mentioned. Being a trio there is less "sound" to deal with so simpler environment might have helped though I agree with your assessment of MPS. I have a handful of their lps and they all sound real good without a particular sonic signature.
This is not morbius but being an unabashed Eric Dolphy fanatic (see avatar) I thought I'd weigh-in on that title. I know, hard to believe that we deplorables from "over there" actually say things It's a stone cold classic IMO, and the AP pressing is perfect. Buy immediately. From a previous post of mine but spinning it this Sunday AM. BTW, there's no cure for ED once you catch the disease. Eric Dolphy: Out There Eric Dolphy — flute, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, clarinet Ron Carter — bass, cello George Duvivier — bass Roy Haynes — drums Recorded at Rudy's Aug 15, 1960 and possibly one of my favorite ED albums. Wait, they're like children, how can I choose a favorite... eh? This is a unique album in it's instrumentation, likely inspired by his stint with Chico Hamilton, and contains a collaboration with Mingus in the title track, which is wholly obvious from the outset. In fact Mingus, with whom Eric had recently played, weighs heavily here. The music if forward looking but completely accessible and swings throughout. OK, one of my faves. This Analogue Productions press is, well, out there.......can't wait for "Outward Bound". And a little 'Out There-against-canvas', analogue art by a local Portland artist:
And for that reason comparing an $18 CD with a vinyl box is a pointless comparison. I know I won't be lovingly gazing at a cd insert 15 years from now. The box is a nice reminder that this year is Monk's centenary. For an artist who has given me more magical moments of musical profundity than anyone else except Miles and possibly Mingus or Gustav Mahler I don't begrudge the money I paid. We're not talking any old piano player here. Thelonious Sphere Monk is worth every penny I've spent on him over the years. (and to hear Barney Wilen perform a ravishing version of 'Pannonica' is just gravy)
I'd love to get my hands on some of those Hans Koller recordings, but they sell for serious money in Japan- if you can find them! CD's will have to do.
I'll confess that I've never listened to JLP, at least as far as I'm aware. I'd check out the clip you posted but this "Little One" is really hitting the spot right now. For a JLP uninitiate, what would you suggest? I'm down for anything, be it acoustic, electric, computers...
If I had been methodical I could have picked up most of the Oscar Peterson Exclusively For My Friends series over a ten year period. In the early 90s they put out a four cd set which I bought instead. It's the only OP I feel I need to own although I do have a few lps as well.
I think I forgot to thank you for responding - sorry! I'm in Boston area so will def. check out Trekker. NP: Sting, The Dream of the Blue Turtles, jazzy pop!
I am here in NYC waiting for my fourth cancer surgery. On my way to the hospital, I passed a street vendor selling copies of sealed Denon Savoy CDs for $1, so I bought a pile. Seven seamed like a lucky number. But I just looked at the pre-op directions and it said do not bring valuables with you. Further down the list it said "Do NOT buy bop music after midnight before your surgery". Apparently it is listed on banned drugs.
Playing a few gigs in Europe and US this month so I'd guess he's fine. Certainly looked OK when he strolled up when I was chatting to Evan Parker at Cafe Oto last year (or maybe back end of 2015). AZIZA featuring Dave Holland, Lionel Loueke, Eric Harland and Chris Potter (2017-05-06)
