I'm not sure if Mr Ed strictly applies as it was just a case of him speaking face to face only with Wilbur. He often spoke on the phone or when people couldn't tell who was speaking and was understood perfectly.

As for Harvey he did talk to one other person that he left Jimmy Stewart for and then returned..

This is a fairly hard topic question as it turns out.

Everyone can understand Silent Bob, he just chooses not to speak most of the time.

  12. Yes, I believe Lando knew Chewie's language, as well.

The thing about Han and Chewie's relationship, though, falls very much into the spirit of this thread. It's that simpatico relationship as best friends forever that, yes, only Han could understand Chewie. Nobody else. It goes beyond language, yet it's full of language.

But even the viewers understand Boomhauer - he speaks in an idiosyncratic way but we can always comprehend what he says...

I guess you're saying only Han "got" Chewie as a friend/partner/whatever, not that only Han understood the meaning of Chewie's utterances.

I agree with that in the "non-sexual soul mate" category, but I don't think that's the thread's intentions. I think it's literally about characters whose speech/utterances can't be comprehended by anyone other than one character.

And that's not the case with Chewie! :)

Wow, this thread has had more legs than I ever would have imagined. :)

Yes, my intention was not to talk about characters who only one other character "gets" (as in understands personal motivations, etc.), but literally a character that only one other character can comprehend when he/she expresses him/her self.

The Go Go Gophers are my prototype because I think their situation is really simple. I've seen lots of people suggest that Ruffled Feathers speaks "gibberish", but I'd bet money that he is speaking Gopher. Since there are only two Gophers left (either in that particular territory, or on the planet, depending on your interpretation of the theme song), Running Board is the only person left who can understand Ruffled Feathers, who can't (or won't) speak English or Tonto-nian.

I know diddly about comic books, but I did get roped into seeing "Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2" by family, breaking my "Never go to see a movie with a number in the title that isn't preceded by the words 'The Godfather - Part" rule. And even that caveat let me down 50% of the time. Anyway, the whole "I am Groot" deal made me think of the Go Go Gophers. From doing a little Googling, apparently (at least in the comic book world, if not the movie world), other people could understand Groot. Or not, what do I know?

Truer words were never spoken. In the movie I mean.

  20. I'd like to put the "I can understand Groot" people to a test.
Have some people who claim they can understand Groot watch an unseen movie with Groot as a character. I watch along with them and after every Groot statement I pause the movie and have them write down what they think Groot meant...then continue with the movie. I'd bet most of what they think they understood is not what the writers have in store for the viewers as the movie unfolds. You, the viewer, are not supposed to understand Groot. That is the realm of Rocket and part of what makes them a duo rather than simply two characters doing the same task.

There's a theory that Donny only exists in John Goodman's mind. The Dude seems to respond to him once, but otherwise everyone but Walter is oblivious to him.

Does anyone understand everything the Minions say other than Gru?

Not counting the other Minions, of course!

I'm thinking the answer is "yes", but I can't remember the "Despicable Me" movies or "Minions" well enough to claim the Minions are intelligible to anyone other than Gru himself...
