Got my Criterion blu-ray today. Really nice booklet included, as well as a small comic book. Haven't watched yet, but I'll be doing that in the next few days.

Is she also twenty years younger than you with a huge rack?

I was just reading the graphic novel "Ghostworld" for the first time and in the opening pages there's an image of Enid's room and on the bookshelf, among four or five named titles, is "The World of Henry Orient." I'm guessing Daniel Clowes was inspired to write the "Ghostworld" story after watching the Peter Sellers' film. A few similarities there.

Clowes has acknowledged this. In the movie, doesn't Enid have a TWoHO poster in her room? It's been a while since I've seen it.

I don't know! I'm going to watch it tonight and will let you know. That was my mother's favorite film when she was young.

Strange that in neither the documentary nor the commentary is Brad Renfro mentioned, or his character.

I thought so too. The documentary was very good, and I enjoyed hearing so much of the thoughts from Thora, Scarlett and Illeana. But the lack of mention of Renfro was noticeable. Maybe they did talk about him and it was excised at the request of the family or someone?

  10. They got Scarlett Johansson to participate? That's cool, so often with these things the ones who went on to become megastars don't bother doing anything related to their indie past.

She was in the Avengers movies, she gets films made and people will show up just because she is in it. She is a megastar if anyone is.

Look forward to comments and reviews of the new bluray. Just for fun, as I know it's gonna be great.

Just can't pull the trigger yet at $27-$30, cheapo miser that I am.

No idea, but she's done a great job of mixing blockbusters and arthouse films, keeping a foot in both worlds. I haven't seen anything from her to convince me that she's the next Merel Streep (that would be Michele Williams) but she's immensely watchable.

The movie and comic sound neat. I've been thinking about picking the movie up during Criterion's flash sale in July but should I know the comic first?

No need, IMO. Loved the film, never even knew there was a comic.

You mention Juno in your review. I thought you might enjoy this interview from IndieWire:

What was the most ridiculous thing that you were the closest to sign on to?
You know, I got the script for “Juno.” And my producer who I had worked with on “Ghost World” called me and said, “I’ve got this really hot script I want to send it to you.” And the same week I got a call that same week from somebody else that said they were sending me this really hot script in Hollywood that was written by a 12-year-old girl. And I said, “Well, what’s it about?” And they said, “It’s a coming-of-age story.” So I said, “Yeah, okay, whatever.” So a couple days later I got this script called “Juno” and since I saw the name Diablo Cody I thought, “Well, this must be the 12-year-old girl.” Who else would have a name like that, right? And I read it and thought, “Well this is pretty good for a 12-year-old girl trying to imitate ‘Ghost World.’ ” So I told my producer, who went on to do it, “This is a retarded version of ‘Ghost World.’ I can’t do it. I can’t stomach it. Sorry.”

Thanks - that's pretty brutal!

I compare the 2 mainly due to tone, as both start glib and get more serious as they go.

    I like both! :)
