I was reading Lewisohn's Recording Sessions and it says George overdubbed a guitar solo. I always assumed the overdubbed guitar was Paul...
    Anyone know?

Sounds like Paul to me, but then I said that about the ahhs too. Let's hope this discussion doesn't get so thorny!

I am beginning to think George did not play anything.

I think Bernie played all those guitar parts. Somebody should ask him.

Lewisohn was wrong. The lead guitar is Paul.
The other two guitars (as heard on take 9) on the basic track is Paul playing the rhythm and George playing the fills.

Don't have access to it at the moment, but I believe the book in the new Pepper box set credits lead parts on the song to both Paul and George. Will double-check that, or if anyone has the book handy ...

  9. Mark isn't perfect. The guitar solo sounds like Paul.

The book seems to be a rushed job. It says Lennon is on guitar on the title track but it's not true. Paul played the rhythm and George played sort of fills on the backing track. Paul then overdubbed the lead guitar.
IIRC, Paul plays the lead guitar at his concerts.

Who is playing what on Take 1 released on the new box set?

The basic live track was: Ringo on drums, Paul playing rhythm guitar, George playing guitar fills. All of that went onto single track.

I love George's little fills on the basic tracks. When I first heard the individual tracks I was surprised to learn they were done live.

Yea, Lewisohn clearly says George was the one who added the "stinging" lead guitar for Sgt. Pepper on 3 March 1967, a good month after the song was recorded. His part done after the brass overdubs. His description indicating that he listened to the session (talks about chat between the brass players, Paul and George Martin) and didn't rely on previous information for his anecdote. Interesting. I always assumed it was Paul, but George did play the fills on the basic takes that are on the released mix as well. Ron

I thought I had always read it was Sir Paul, and it even kinda has his tone.

Yes, it is. Especially the final "indian" adlib bit at the end of the third verse. Very similar to his Taxman and Good Morning Good Morning stuff.
Paul still plays the lead guitar at his concerts.

I think this is the same pic I poked fun at Paul in a different thread. That he played lead guitar with his fingers and bass with a pick. Those wacky Beatles.:agree: Ron

Is John playing rhythm guitar on it? The box-set says so.
