As one of the earlier posters noted, "Beth" by Kiss pretty much opens and closes the discussion.

How about out of character hit songs that consequently change the trajectory of the band to make it their new character?

I'm thinking firstly of Sugar Ray. When it came out, "Fly" was a drastic change of pace for a band that had been basically a punk, hard rock, funk metal combo for their entire first record and 90% of the second. But after "Fly" became such a huge hit, they drastically changed focus for their third record, 14:59. Even the band seemed to acknowledge this, with the short intro track being called, "New Direction".

If there was any doubt before, this song confirmed that he couldn't.

Not saying it doesn't fit into the category because of how well it did in the charts ... I was just a little amazed of just how well it really did in the charts. That´s all.

Well, he's no Caruso or Sinatra, but pleasant enough and carried the tune, and his vocal timbre fit the song well.

True, but by that time, George's Indian phase and their overall eclectic experimentation were already a part of their musical palette. By 1968, the only track that threw me for a loop was "Revolution 9."

'Revolution 9' probably is the tight brother of John & Yoko's Unfinished Music material which came out around the same time. But it is more enjoyable than their early solo stuff.^^

At least not until they tried going for that sound again on "The Day That Curly Billy Shot Down Crazy Sam McGee".

They just missed the Top 40 with "I'm Coming Home" from the first album. First time I heard a bit of it on the radio, I thought it might be a new McCartney single. (Would have like it better than "Mary Had A Little Lamb" from about the same time).

This Diana Ross song, though not a hit, is pretty out of character....I was friends with a dj who loved to play it for shock value. (Sounds like it belongs on Grace Slick's Welcome To The Wrecking Ball)

U2 - Lemon (Probably the most interesting song they ever did...)

Beatles: Long and Winding Road (out of character thanks to Spector)

Former Fairport member Iain (Ian) Matthews had a hit with the pop rock "Shake It". Most of his solo material sounds nothing like it.

Joni Mitchell....`Big Yellow Taxi` ...probably one of the worst songs she ever wrote.

An earlier poster mentioned `The Cure`....if ever a band had two faces it would be `The Cure`, on one hand songs about suicidal loneliness `10:15 Saturday Night` .....and animals screaming while they die, `The Hanging Garden`.....and about being eaten alive by giant spiders `Lullaby`.....and on the other hand songs about cute CATS!
