Mariah Carey has sold over 200 million albums and (for better or worse) influenced pop music with her melismatic singing style. She's absolutely a legend.

I consider Kate a living legend and I'm American... and so do most music lovers. It's just mainstream pop fans who don't get her in the US but alas she was never meant to have the mass appeal of a Whitney or Madonna stateside.

Actually, Clint composes all the film scores of the movies he directs. He is a piano player and composer.

Some might not agree but I think Nils Lofgren qualifies. Grin,Crazy Horse,Neil Young, E Street Band and a long long solo career.

Wait - you're not sure if Paul McCartney counts as a "living legend"? He's not the likes of John Legend or (presumably) Eddie Cochran? :wtf:

yes the are really very good legends right now out there, but only in the kind of music i use to listen and that is instrumental music by instrument made by hand! i dont use to listen to rock and pop and such, but use to listen like only 3 old style albums of rock kind of style.

In rock, I'd give the "Living Legend" nod to Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, U2, and Metallica. Selling out stadiums and arenas then, selling out stadiums and arenas now. I'd put Fleetwood Mac and Pearl Jam one tier lower, only because their tours aren't quite the events of the above acts. (I suppose Guns & Roses could demand a nomination, given their current success.)

I assume Madonna's still capable of headlining arena tours, but I don't know enough about other pop stars to hazard a guess.

In jazz, I suspect Keith Jarrett still commands the top ticket prices and venues.

Not only that, but he put Madonna ahead of McCartney. Madonna's not a "living legend", more like a "living nuisance".

1st generation rock and roll living legend Sonny Burgess recorded his first record for Sun in 1956 and is now 86. Sonny remains active, both as a touring performer and a recording artist. Take a look at Sonny Burgess & The Legendary Pacers' busy touring schedule for 2017, with dates booked into 2018!

Are you saying McCartney is not a legend on the order of those others? Ridiculous. Cochran is mostly remembered these days for writing a tune the Who covered.

To the extent any of those are greater legends than Paul it is because they are dead.

I was fortunate enough to see two living legends performing together at NJPAC a couple of months ago.

    Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock.
