Not sure if he's been mentioned, but I'll nominate Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead.

I'm just listening to Robert Hunter on the archive, I was coming here to nominate him.

I also found this on a Dylan fansite:

Bob Dylan must have a death wish hooking up with some guy called Bob Hunter.

For me he sure is a legend, but pick a multigenerational panel of people, i am sure less people would know McCartney versus Madonna, she was quite controversial in her days...

Fair point, but someone earlier though that groups such as Muse,Coldplay and Radiohead were living Legends. And for me Weller has far more claim to that title than those groups. But i accept he is not in the same bracket as Dylan/McCartney

I've never heard a Muse song and couldn't identify any of the band members.

I would not put Radiohead, Muse or Coldplay in that category, a few people could name the band members, they only hit the media when they issue new albums or tour...
Bono is engaged in humanitarian work and is often seen on tv around that.
Dylan is definitely a legend, didn't he just receive a nobel prize ?

McCartney is also a legend, unfortunately i don't think a lot of young people launching their bands or making music say "i want to be the next McCartney", he is a legend because he is with Ringo a Beatle.

I know the thread is about 'living' legends but I thought this story was good regarding entry into such a group.
Heard Noel Gallagher on the radio a few years ago talking about fame and celebrity. He was asked about how his kids view him as 'famous'. Noel said they take it in their stride, are almost bemused by the whole thing. It led into telling a story about being accosted very early in the morning when out with his daughter Anaïs and I think one of his sons buying bacon and eggs for breakfast in the supermarket. A fan approached him all, "Noel! Noel! Oh my God!" Etc. He wanted an autograph. Noel said he was polite but explained that he had his kids with him, not just now, sorry, blah blah. The fan understood, "Yeah, yeah, no problem, look - great to meet you, you're a legend!!!", at which point Noel's daughter, then aged about ten piped up from behind the shopping basket, "Well .... technically you have to be dead to be a legend ...."

But many bands both past and present consider The Beatles to be a huge influence. And as the best band to ever live and the fact that McCartney wrote half of those songs then i feel that few in any other artists deserve the title of 'living legend' as much as he does. Also not fair to lump Paul together with Ringo as just another member of the band.As someone mentioned earlier i would also add Brian Wilson to that list.
