Back then, I got the impression that Meredith was trying to establish a singing career. I remember one or two other episodes, where she returned (after being away) and sang for everyone. It was almost like a "guest spot", even tho she was supposedly still part of the cast. So it was possibly in her contract, that she'd be the featured singer on this song. I'm just guessing.
