This is the answer. End of story.

They did everything The Who did in the first post, but bigger and more successfully.

(first singles were in 1981, so I think it counts - and yes, The Party's Over is fantastic)

Tangerine Dream 1970-1980 (though, I'd say this is more of a 15 year run - Johannes breathed new life into this band and it shows, the 80s stuff is really good too)

My first two choices that immediately came to mind, but I'd say '74-'84 for Rush

Genesis '70-'80 is another I agree with.

Yet another that someone else mentioned that I agreed with is Ronnie James Dio's personal run across three bands (Rainbow, Sabbath, DIO) from '75-'85.

Black Sabbath '70-'80 was fantastic as well

    Metallica '81-'91

Megadeth '84-'94 both were great too.

We all know the winner is the Beatles which did everything within 8 years, so we're really just picking the 2nd best run :)

I certainly agree with Gitters. '73-'82 was easily their most influential, classic stuff. And I love their late '80s-'90s stuff (that's the era I grew up on).

Pretty much all my favorite bands had a great 10 year run. Some a little shorter. Some a little longer.

    Primus 1989-1998.
    The Cars - 1978-1984
    Rush 1975-1987

I think this thread has no real point so we might as well turn this into a Who vs. Zep battle. I'll take the Who. Nothing Zeppelin did can successfully match the scope and brilliance of Quadrophenia. Tommy also tops Physical graffiti however that's my favorite Zep album. Moon better drummer. Blah blah blah.

a bit of a stretch, but 'The Eagles were pretty defined 'top and bottom' in ten years.

    5. The Kinks 1964-1974

Assuming The Beatles didn't quite meet the 10-year requirement, I assumed that without confirming it. The Rolling Stones had a couple of duds that distracted from their best 10-year run but might make the 6th spot for me.

Me too! I'm just feeling ornery. Sadly I've mostly worn out Zeppelin. Great band, huge sound. Classic rock radio and over-indulgence on my part makes them hard to listen to anymore. I do still spin Physical Graffiti on occasion though.

1962 - 1970 isn't ten years (and even 62-70 is being overly generous) Only one single was released in (late) 1962 and only one song was recorded in 1970 around new year's day - though there was a bit of overdubbing done after that on some tracks that were well over a year old.

So really it only amounted to seven years - but hey I forgot - EVERY thread around here is a Beatles thread - whether its meant to be or not it ALWAYS gets there eventually.

That's for both the sentence as a whole - as well as the (mis)use of that particular word in it.

Yeah, The Who was my pick in the first post, but I thought Led Zep was a close second for me with the album run and live shows they had in that 10 year run.

Ha, very true. Eventually this thread will have a 10 year claim for The Beatles and each solo Beatles 10 year run!

I would say 1987 to 1997 for Nick. Couldn't leave out Tender Prey or The Good Son. They're his masterpieces in my book.

Def agree with Zep, The Who, Genesis, Van Morrison and REM.

I would add Mike Oldfield 1973 - 1983 (which includes Tubular Bells, Hergest Ridge Ommadawn etc)
