Impossible to do, because how do you 'encapsulate' singer/songwriters, punk, disco, prog, country-rock, hard rock, heavy metal, soft rock, fusion, pop-rock, and commercial mainstream rock? All of them were big at some point in the '70's, and the first half of the decade couldn't have been more starkly different that what came as the decade closed.

A fun topic, but the problem is that I'm not sure just one album could do it.

I suppose if I was forced to make a general choice, it might come down to one of these three:

    Rumours - Fleetwood Mac
    Saturday Night Fever - Soundtrack
Their Greatest Hits: The Eagles 1971-1975

I'm not sure if the last album is cheating or not, but it may just be the one that is most genuine in painting a general brush over the vibe of the decade. At least in mainstream terms.

Alive in 75. This one would be a good time capsule keeper. Some great music here 1970's style.

Of course I wasn't born in the 70s, but it would have to be Meat Loaf - Paradise By The Dashboard Light

Wow I had that exact album as a kid and I wore it out. I loved it because it didn't wuss out and have radio edits. Long version of Radar Love for the win.

Edit: I may be remembering that wrong as a comment I read on Amazon suggests it has a shortened version of Radar Love. Could have sworn it was the long version though.

As others have said, no matter the quality of the material, so few heard it during the 1970s that it wasn't really emblematic of the era. In the 1970s Big Star meant little to nothing.

I made a set of "deep tracks" from the 70's. By the time I got done I had 12 CD-R's full. The home made compilations are usually the best.

In my opinion, this would indicate an extremely poor decade artistically. Maybe it's so...
