    1. Richard Thompson is the complete package: the Swiss army-knife of guitarists. Once you put him in first place he really opens up the rest of the list because you don't need another great acoustic guitarist, another great stylist or another great electric soloist. Everyone else I think of I have that immediate feeling 'but I've already got Richard Thompson!'
    2. So, Jerry Garcia number two. There's nothing flashy about most of what he played: he's not a 'lead guitarist' in the traditional sense. But once you pay attention to his phrasing you find that what he's doing is incredibly deep & subtle. I've got a feeling that many solid guitar players just wouldn't know where to start if they were asked to play like Jerry: his technique really was very deep indeed.
    3. There are a lot of great stylists where you would recognise their sound anywhere, and with only five slots I can't make room for Robert Fripp, Duane Allman, Brian May or The Edge though I can't find fault with anyone who does. Instead I'll give my third slot to Mike Oldfield.
    4. There are a lot of great classic rock guitarists and to omit any of them makes it look like you've forgotten about them. Hendrix & Clapton aren't favourites of mine (if we're talking greatest guitarists it's a different list!). Zappa & Townshend are favourites, but not so much as guitarists. So I think Jimmy Page will have to stand for all of them.
    5. Last place, then, can be 'just 'cause' so I'll pick Umphrey's McGee's Jake Cinninger: not just because he's a technically impressive guitarist (though he is) but because if you want an improvising guitarist who can do anything, Jake's the one.
My list was complete when I saw this come in. I'm sure a lot of people will be surprised to see a guitarist who's essentially a self-accompanist rating amongst the greats but you really nailed it with that pick; I think that anyone who's seen Ani live would understand why she counts for this thread. :righton:

Hmmm...tough, VERY tough. But I'll try, in order:

    Django Reinhardt
    Terje Rypdal
    Jimi Hendrix
    Carlos Santana
    Lonnie Mack

I could easily add another 10 or so to the list (even a 100), but this is based on my mood TONIGHT.

Five is just WAY too few.

Regardless Django would always be on top.
There is a good reason I've had like 20 some Django records since I was a teen back in the early 1970's. :agree:

Mark O'Connor is amazing, but not just with guitar, but many instruments.

Bireli Lagrene, electric? REALLY??? Are you sure you got that right?
As much as I like Bireli Lagrene, in no way, shape, or form, could one list him whilst omitting Django Reinhardt. Bireli would be a nobody if not for his early on copy of Django. Seriously.

I've always had a ton of respect for Gary's playing, but this, well, it actually has pushed me over the brink I was already teetering on and made me decide to quite playing out live and go back into the woodshed and either learn how to really play or just hang up guitar after almost 40 years.

    Wow.

Don't do that, keep playing; I am sure Gary would have wanted you to (if he was still here).

There is a tonne of jaw-dropping Gary Moore live performances on YouTube; he was incredible. Keep playing, keep listening and enjoy.

It's impossible for me to name just 5 guitarists so instead I'll go with 10. This may be subject to change and I Believe that these 10 are just the tip of the iceberg, in no particular order:

All the guitarists in Iron Maiden (I just can't choose one , it's impossible to choose because how much I love this band although i have a certain fondness for Steve Harrison. All of these gentlemen rule!)
Bob Dylan (He does afteral play acoustic guitar and is Amazing at it, I feel his guitar skills are often underrated)
    Jimi Hendrix
    Jimmy Page
    Cliff Burton and James Hetfield
    Mark Knopfler
    Steve Howe
    Alex Lifeson
    Steve Hacket
    Eric Clapton

Of course if I have to go with just 5 it has to be, of those I've already mentioned (at the moment):
    Steve Harrison
    Jimi Hendrix
    Eric Clapton
    Alex Lifeson
    Jimmy Page

Of course there are so many more I have not mentioned yet that I love too.

The five guitarists that probably influenced my own playing more than any others:

    Dave Gilmour
    Steve Hackett
    Robert Fripp
    Mike Oldfield
    Roy Buchanan

(not that I claim to be any good, but a man's reach must extend beyond his grasp)

  25. Nice. That was their last really good line-up, post the original era. The 'Birdland' album was real good. After Dreja got sick and moved on, I did too. McCarty and He still had and made the "sound", now to me, they are like the Who. A glorified bar band. McCarty is still great though, and I wish him the best. His Jim McCarty Blues Band album from probably around that 2005 time is super, super good.
