RIP, John's my favorite jazz guitarist. That first Gateway album is one of my all-time favorites.

I was first introduced to him on the first Dreams album and have enjoyed his playing every since.
Heaven's band gets larger and we must deal with the silence.
At the end, his work is a tribute to his time.
But why do these hurt so much ?

  5. Yes, a very special guitar player. In my mind one of the most original ones. Huge loss!

Sad news. Such a unique player. Gateway's Homecoming is one of my favorites - so tasty in phrasing and tone. RIP John.

I own all of Abercrombie’s albums and ones that he appeared on as a sideman. Truly an outstanding player with an identifiable sound of his own. I believe I’ll spin some of his albums this weekend. RIP, John.

In addition to Gateway and his work as a leader, I love the two albums John did with Jack DeJohnette's New Directions with Lester Bowie (some of Lester's best playing on record) and Eddie Gomez. Both on ECM. A really great group who unfortunately weren't together for long.

DeJohnette's earlier group with Abercrombie also did some great records for ECM and Milestone.

I took John Abercrombie for granted for years, thinking he was "just another Jazz guitarist". Then a few years back, a friend of mine turned me onto his music so I started seeing him live on his swings through Boston. I was lucky to see him 2 or 3 times... and now he's gone. So sad to hear this.

Have enjoyed his music since first hearing about 1974 and got lucky enough to see him in an intimate setting at a venue in Boston, 1990.

My favorite cd of his is ARCADE.

Let’s not forget his amazing work with Charles Lloyd and Kenny Wheeler. All of these albums he played on with these guys are nothing short than stellar.

I would just like this post but seriously the Stark Reality is some of my absolute favorite music of any genre ever, some insane guitar shredding over children's standards, I never tire of listening to that band. So recommended.
