I'm really excited by this. I have this on DVD from an old TV capture back in the day. I hope this opens things up for more TV edits of other films. It was done quite a lot back then to make them more "epic" and sometimes spread over two nights like King Kong.

Was this TV version only ever shown in the USA?

Is there a site showing how this version differs from the previous cuts?

One cool thing about this box set is that Superman I and II Donner Cut are given DTS-HD sound, while the individual BDs have only plain old Dolby Digital. The upgraded sound is a must, IMO.

  7. All Warner Archive Blu-ray releases are on pressed BDs, not BD-Rs.

Apart from Superman and Star Trek The Motion Picture, I am not aware how many other films were given extra scenes for their TV version. Was that a practice of the times? Wasn't Halloween given this treatment as well?

Maybe we need to start a new thread, but what other
Airplane had several jokes added "Hi jack" comes to mind. Its on the outakes and explained by ZAZ that it wasn't in the movie because they didn't think the joke was funny

Godfather and Scarface both had extra scenes on TV. I think they used outtakes to make up for scenes they had to delete or shorten due to R-rated content. I also recently saw Pulp Fiction on TV with at least one extra scene.

So, is the three-hour version really worth it? I don't think I've seen any version of this movie since 1978 but I'm intrigued at the many different cuts of this film.

I don't think Star Trek had that much added. And Aliens was actually the director's cut. Others that come to mind with a lot of extra footage are The Deep and Towering Inferno. I think a number of the "airline disaster" films of the 70s had extra long edits. Just adding a few extra minutes like Halloween I wouldn't count as an epic TV edit. Some of these other films had up to an hour of extra footage added.

The "Dune" and "Brazil" TV cuts come to mind, but those are infamous for not having directors' approval.

I seem to recall when "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" was being made, they actually filmed "clean" versions of many scenes for eventual TV usage (as opposed to just dubbing in dialog later). I don't know if any of those scenes have ever been commercially released though.

THE SWARM, WHEN TIME RAN OUT, DAMNATION ALLEY, KING KONG all had extra scenes added for TV.

  19. It happened often in the 1980s and 1990s. Networks were shying away from longer mini-series productions so they filled the void with extended movie cuts.

I see that IMDB lists a couple of extra scenes (one about going to the soda machine), but is the movie changed that much?

"Car Wash" added an entire subplot with Danny DeVito and almost completely eliminated Antonio Fargus's character...

Hey did I just hijack my own thread?:yikes:
