And at the time, AM radio was (and still is) fully capable of 50-15,000 Hz response and better. Some stations did that and advertised it for fine music mostly classical, most didn't. In 1989 new FCC regulations hard limited the frequency response of an AM station to 10,200 Hz. Most AM stations don't achieve that and don't really care.
But when those AM/FM simulcasts were done, around 1959-1961, it was generally with a wideband high fidelity AM station and a wideband FM station. It was just experimental and techie, stereo at all was new and upcoming, while the business interests - broadcasters and radio manufacturers - fought out which Stereo FM standard would be adopted.
Your Kenwood probably has a switch for AM labeled "wide" to allow a wideband AM station its full range at the expense of a bit of AM noise. It also probably has a socket on back labeled "MPX" to plug in the FM Multiplex Adapter, to be manufactured and sold after a Stereo FM standard was chosen. The FCC chose a standard in April 1961, and the good manufacturers had their MPX adapters out within 2-3 months. And also, all-new receivers including Stereo FM.

That's an amazing score for both. Congratulations!

Heck yeah it is worth at least $25. It may look a little rough but it is 50 years old. Even at that, vintage stuff often has a certain look about it even if like-new. I hate to use the word "dated" to describe the style of some vintage stuff but hey, that kenwood is still awesome.

The speakers were garbage. I can't remember the brand - some 70s off-brand crap.

I built myself a Dim Bulb Tester and the AKAI powered up ok. I've now cleaned the pots and switches and I have her warming up with full power and a CD player hooked to the AUX. I'll check out some tunes via headphones shortly. Love the blue lights!

It's sounds good. Listened to both front and back channels and everything sounds nice save a little bit of static still present in the rear left channel volume control. No big deal I can always hit that pot again if and when I go all out Quad. I'm going to swap this with my Pioneer SX-880 for a bit and do some daily 2 channel listening.
