I'm fond of animation, so here's my want-list: Warner Bros. animation all the way from the earliest shorts through the end in the late 60s; I'd settle for the period in the 30's when Fred Avery was hired in through the early 60s when Freleng/Jones/McKimson stopped making theatricals in 1963. Complete MGM Tom and Jerry shorts Complete MGM Tex Avery shorts Complete Fleischer/Paramount Superman shorts Superman is in the public domain so that would be iffy, the others are Warner properties (the Superman character is also Warner controlled, but the Superman shorts didn't get their copyright renewed so it's doubtful Criterion would invest in that series). A carefully culled series of Warner Bros. cartoons would do in a pinch - the back catalog is large, and restoring everything wouldn't be too practical. There are plenty of duds (pretty much all of the 60s output, a lot of B&W Looney Tunes from the 30's are meh, a number of 50s shorts are middling, so perhaps Jerry Beck could be pressed into service as a consultant to put together compilations that fill in MIA gaps while giving the topnotch shorts their due.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture (Director's Cut) on Blu-ray. Unaltered theatrical versions of Star Wars on Blu-ray.
Brother Sun Sister Moon (English & Italian versions w/ new surround mixes) Dead Poet's Society (extended laserdisc cut) The Hanging Tree Mosquito Coast
This would be fantastic! It could be packed in a matching style box to the films collection box. Tokyo shock started to release the TV series a way back in the DVD era, but only issued the 26 episodes of the 1974 (1st) season. I was pretty disappointed when season two never materialized.
Yes! And several other Schlesinger possibilities: Darling Far from the Madding Crowd Midnight Cowboy Marathon Man
I've long thought Crimson Tide would be a superior addition to Criterion's collection of popcorn movies getting the deluxe treatment. Trainspotting would be a good one as well.
David Lynch's (more or less) intended director's cut of Dune... as seen in the 7th and final draft of the script, prepared after principal photography was finished and the basis for Lynch's original workprint version. Had Universal not ordered him to gut the film, this is likely the version that would have been released and the version that should be restored. http://www.duneinfo.com/Content/files/dune_script_7th_draft.pdf If the studio don't want to do anything with the film, let them give it to someone like Criterion who will...
That would be really cool. One I would like to see, and I know it will not happen, is the unedited version of Disney's The Black Cauldron.
M "Midnight Cowboy" has been rumored as a potential Criterion title for the last couple of years . Let's see if that's true
"Baby Doll" with Eli Wallach "The Trouble With Harry" "Once Upon A Time In The West" A collection of "Scrappy" cartoons, never happen but I'd like to have it.
2046 Criterion has already done so many Wong Kar-wai films, and this one's limited availability, gorgeous cinematography, and crazy pre-release history (deleted Tung Wai martial arts scenes?!?) makes it a perfect choice. Shalom, y'all! L. Bangs
Well, there is this coming out: Suspiria - 40th Anniversary Synapse Exclusive 4K Remaster [Limited Edition Two-Disc Blu-ray + CD Steelbook] (Only 6000 Produced) - Synapse Films Not sure what else Criterion could add?
Yeah, this is one case where I can't see Criterion doing any better. Synapse has been working on this for quite some time, and it's probably their most eagerly anticipated title. It should be the definitive home video treatment of the film. I preordered it the day it was announced.
It looks like an excellent release, and I'm not a fan. However, I am a fan of beautiful releases fully restored and loaded with bonus content. I know what I'm looking for in a release, and I think it's great when fans of things I'm not really into, get the releases they deserve as fans. Synapse looks like they've put a lot of thought and care into their upcoming SUSPIRIA. I see the "release date" at blu-ray.com is Dec. 31st, 2017. I'm sure this is just a placeholder date. I first heard about this release back in May. Any idea when it's actually going to be released?
