    Without You - Harry Nilsson or Badfinger (either one has different degrees of sadness) IMO.

    The Rolling Stones' songs about unrequited love have always hit me hard. I Got the Blues and No Expectations, especially. You can feel the pain in Mick's voice in those songs.

    If you don't believe me what I'm saying,
    At three o'clock in the morning, well,
    I'm singing my song for you

    There's 48 pages to this thread, so w/o reading them all, I'm guessing this one's already been suggested; but I'm tossing in The Cure's 'Pictures of You' as a worthy contender.

    Any of the Chopin's Nocturnes;

    And also one can never resist listing Serenade for Strings in the list....

    I don't know if it's the saddest, but I'll throw in Emma's Song by Joe Walsh

    Not a huge Stones fan; having said that, No Expectations is pretty much near the top for me, as far as Stones songs goes;
    'Once I was a rich man
    Now, I am so poor
    But never in my sweet, short life
    Have I felt like this, before'

    Just what we need, another Beatles track! Even as a little kid, when I didn't fully realize what this song was about, I thought it just sounded sad. Maybe my favorite Paul song.

    Does someone know which Smiths' release has ever featured the song "Everyday Is Like Sunday"? Neither found it in any of Morrissey's solo efforts. This song melody has a very melancholy feel, although I don't find a directly sad feel to it, nor ever paid attention to the lyrics. I love that song anyways...

    It wasn't a Smiths song, it was a Morrissey solo song right at the beginning of his career after the Smiths' breakup. It was on his first solo LP Viva Hate, released March '88, and also the compilation Bona Drag, released Oct. '90 (both dates from Wikipedia).

    Empty Chairs at Empty Tables. Not sure that's the title but it's when the character, Marius, in the musical "Les Miserables", laments his friend's deaths.
