The non sequential ordering is weird; I get why they did it, but I haven't seen an automatic changer in anyone's home since I was a kid playing with my grandma's hi-fi in the late 80s

1/4/2/3 is obsolete and a total pain now.

Although the greatest album of all time (Electric Ladyland) went A/D/B/C!

    I prefer 1 2 3 4 but most of the ones i own are 1 4 2 3:shrug:
It's hard work if i want to listen as it was designed.
But that's the way with vinyl.:)

When I was a kid, the first album I bought with 1/4/2/3 was the soundtrack from the first Star Wars movie. The thought of stacking the records on a changer almost kills me, and I'm surprised they still did that in 1977 when that came out.

In addition, the music on that album was completely out of sequence compared to what it was in the movie, so it just made it even more of a mess.

Ron Wood 1234. I do not listen to LPs so I don't have any hassle with **** like this.

How is that pronounced with the umlaut? Is that like “fewkt?”

Difficult.....I really do not know an English word with that pronounciation. If you know the French expression Déjà vu, you have the ü at the very end. Traveling Wilburys has something like the ü as well.

I have (I think) an original pressing of Quadrophenia which I scored for two bucks at the flea market over the summer - jacket is trashed, but book is decent and there's only one minor scratch on one side. I don't play records very often but I played that thing like twenty times in the first week alone. But it is stacking style and that really bugs me. I wish it was sequential. So, to answer the question, the first one.

I hate 1/4/2/3. It´s always a pain to switch records when there´s no need to do so

1/2/3/4 only. the 1/4/2/3 was for those record changers with the tall spindles. Long gone and forgotten (I hope). Good riddance, I say!

I never noticed the 1/4/2/3 thing growing up. I wonder how many albums I had listened to incorrectly because of that.

Years ago I bought Capitol's The Beatles Story just for fun, it's a 1970s reissue (with the giant company logo on the label).
I was surprised that this 1/4/2/3 variant exists. And no, I like the normal way 1/2/3/4!! I'm no DJ!?!...^^

ELO's Out Of The Blue is 1/2/3/4, but a test pressing I had was 1/4/2/3.

1-2, 3-4 is best. The other configuration, i'm sure, was created for those with record changers.

I think The Beatles Story is 1/4/2/3 as well as The Beach Boys’ Endless Summer. The Who’s Tommy is also messed up.

1/2/3/4 for me...I can't stand the 1/4/2/3 format though I do have a couple double albums laid out that way (I know my copy of Manassas is one of 'em).
Is that why they did it? I had no idea...still, dumb idea, like New Coke or McDonald's pizza or something:laugh:

I'm spinning Tommy right now in my office and it's such a pain since there's an actual storyline involved.

I think I had an album - Frankie Goes to Hollywood's Pleasuredome LP - that had the 1/4 - 2/3. I could put it on automatic and the record-dropper spindle thing would drop side 2 down right after side 1 so I could hear it in sequence. I did that until some guy at the record store told me it would ruin the record by trapping dust and causing scratches between the 2 records. I notice that nowadays I never see turntables with the record-dropper thing.

Since 1964, I look at the number on the label anyway, so it makes no difference to me. Too many actual, far more important things in life to be "annoyed" by.
