Has "Casablanca" lost its status as a great film?

I don't think movie collectors coming up in the age of vhs, dvds had the same interest in old Hollywood movies. Flashier, director-driven films took precedence, while older Hollywood films were something to see on TCM.
So, I think it's an interesting question. Perhaps, Casablanca is not seen as the "greatest film ever" like maybe it once was.

It may be a classic but I thought it was incredibly boring and did not care for the characters or the story in any way.

Not my cup of tea. Citizen Kane, OTOH, was a whole lot better. On The Waterfront was fantastic. Casablanca? Pass.

I loved Casablanca as a kid growing up: A well-acted WWII melodrama with the Nazis
as the bad guys and a lone American making hard moral choices that affect his love life.
As an adult, after much reading about WWII and the run-up to the hostilities, a few
things bother me now...especially the fact that the sympathetic Czech patriot Victor Lazlo
is probably based on the leader of the Communist resistance. No surprise considering the
identity of the screenwriters, but something that definitely "went over my head" when I watched it
on TV as a teenager in the 1960s.

Casablanca along with Citizen Kane, Gone With The Wind and the Wizard Of Oz are timeless.

Watched Gone With The Wind again on TV last night. There's some
serious overacting going on in that movie (and I'm not talking about the
    bit-players and supporting cast).

Also, apparently, Beethoven wasn't so great.

    Lucy Van Pelt:
What kind of music is *that*?

    Schroeder:
    Beethoven Christmas music.

    Lucy Van Pelt:
What's so great about Beethoven? Everyone talks about how "great" Beethoven was. Beethoven wasn't so great.

    Schroeder:
What do you mean Beethoven wasn't so great?

    Lucy Van Pelt:
He never got his picture on a bubble gum card. Have you ever seen his picture on a bubble gum card? Hmmm? How can you say someone is great who's never had his picture on a bubble gum card?

    Schroeder:
    Good grief.

If you give me a choice between Casablanca and something that's in theaters right now, there's about a 98% chance I'd pick Casablanca.

It will always be a great film as far as I'm concerned. I've seen it at least 30 times, and still love it.

An original nitrate print, run in a vintage movie palace on a projector using a carbon arc lamp? ;)

Since that may be a bit difficult to arrange, I'll assume you were referring to home video, in which case the currently-available Warner blu-ray is very nice.

I can look at this frame all day. The lighting, the gorgeous narrow focus, the perfect B&W tonality, and of course the stunning Ingrid Bergman...omg.

The 70th Anniversary Blu-ray from a few years ago looked extremely good. I have it on good authority that Warner's MPI department spent over six months remastering and restoring this from a dozen different film elements. The movie has never looked so sharp, so clear, with no dirt, scratches, or anything. An amazing job.

Great films don’t change. Society, however, appears to be on a ‘dumbward’ spiral.

More convincing than Mel Gibson in The Beaver (2011)?
