There was a lot of old school death metal bands that released some great stuff this year, especially Immolation and Obituary. That Immolation was probably my fave release this year. Incantation, Cannibal Corpse, and Morbid Angel released really strong records too. The Morbid Angel one I thought was their best since Gateways. Necrot was prolly my fave new school death release, great stuff. Another vet band who released a good one was Cradle of Filth. In fact, they're last 2 have been a great return to form. My 2 fave black metal releases this year were Wode and Au Dessus. My fave doomy-doom-doom release was Bell Witch ~ Mirror Reaper, which also gets my vote for the best cover art of 2017. Also really liked that Pallbearer release too. Here's to next year, another year filled with EEEEEVVVVVVIIIIIIIIILLLLLLL, SSSSSSSAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYTTTTTTTTTTEEEEEENNNNNNN, and SOUL CRUSHING DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMM!
Enslaved - 'E' is a top tier metal album for me this year and I was surprised it didn't make their Top 50 list. The afore mentioned Bell Witch album is also quite fantastic.
That new Cannibal Corpse album keeps opening up more and more for me, these dudes have been on an incredible little roll for the past 3-4 albums, but I think this one is even the best of that batch.
Incidentally, SPIN (I know, I know) put out a list of the Top 25 Metal songs of 2017 and it actually was very good... The 25 Best Metal Songs of 2017
Some bad news in metal today - Warrel Dane ex. Nevermore/Sanctuary lead singer died of a heart attack. NEVERMORE And SANCTUARY Singer WARREL DANE Dies Of Heart Attack In Brazil
How can I resist a song called "Couch Slut"? I'm more of a Chesterfield man myself. The Couchess Megan Osztrosits A list from Pop Matters, if it matters. That Converge album seems to have made it onto every list I've seen. I only listened to one song and it wasn't to my taste unfortunately. The Best Metal of 2017 1. Bell Witch: Mirror Reaper 2. Pallbearer: Heartless 3. Converge: The Dusk in Us 4. Pyrrhon: What Passes for Survival 5. Rebirth of Nefast: Tabernaculum 6. Endon: Through the Mirror 7. Spectral Voice: Eroded Corridors of Unbeing 8. Dodecahedron: Kwintessens 9. Enslaved: E 10. Akercocke: Renaissance in Extremis 11. Code Orange: Forever 12. Power Trip: Nightmare Logic 13. Aosoth: V: The Inside Scriptures 14. Elder: Reflections of a Floating World 15. Spirit Adrift: Curse of Conception 16. Royal Thunder: WICK 17. Ex Eye: Ex Eye 18. Succumb: Succumb 19. Mastodon: Emperor of Sand 20. Cloak: To Venomous Depths for the "EEEEEVVVVVVIIIIIIIIILLLLLLL" Yeah, Death Metal dominated my listening this year. I even started to feel like I was snubbing Black Metal but it's just the strength of the DM releases. Still, I'm looking at BM that had a fair bit of buzz from the last few years and have been listening to Litourgiya by Batushka from 2015. I saw that cover art a lot that year and it does suit the music, sounding cathedral bound as if monks have gone Black Metal. They had better be wearing hoods! I know I drop music probably too quickly if it doesn't immediately appeal to me but this, which is obviously not intended for quick and easy access, I'll let linger for a time. Out of the following imaginatively titled hymns I'll randomly post #5. Yekteniya 1 Yekteniya 2 Yekteniya 3 Yekteniya 4 Yekteniya 5 Yekteniya 6 Yekteniya 7 Yekteniya 8

Old-School Metal - Radio Show Again, he's doing it oddly. Presently he's posting one song a day of his top 30-21...in random order! I'll wait until he's done.
Here's something fun that I've been meaning to post a few months ago...but I dropped the ball on that. This album is a bit different than the Acheron stuff I've heard. It's slower, full of atmospheric keyboards, and just shredding guitar solos that kind of seem out of place for the style of music, but somehow it all works. The vocals are more Blackish than their older or newer stuff. This track has Corpsegrinder as a guest vocalist...I believe David Vincent is on another track. Enjoy!
I was right! Major hood ornamentation!!! But I was also wrong about hoods always looking idiotic. They look pretty groovy in that setting.
Looking at their merch and 19 different items of apparel but no bathrobes. Seems an appropriate item to have considering their stage show. I suppose bathrobes and dropped towels are really out of fashion right now. Yet another phenomena that's over before I even knew it existed. Behind the curve again. (Is it too soon?) I do like this T-shirt though.
I'd love to have one of those robes to wear when I walk out in the morning and get my mail. The neighbors would love it.
