Thanks for the affirmation from an expert that I haven't bought a complete dud;). It's always great to receive your highly valued opinion.

Spotify Premium. This could pass as early Schubert, although I doubt if he even heard Schubert in England at the time, but you never know.

Recorded by Kenneth Wilkinson at the now-defunct Sofiensaal in Vienna, the soundstage is so incredibly wide and deep that you are thrown into the midst of the performance.
Get the WG CD to get the full glory of this Magnificent Decca sound from the 1970’s. Not to be confused with the conductor’s later Chicago attempt that is just so-so both performance-wise and sonic-wise.

Highly enjoyable performances that I have slight preference to over Previn's and those Vox/Turnabout lps which I grew up with

I have had this excellent LP twofer since the early 80's but one of the records is a bit warped. I pretty much have been listening to the CD's version over the years ...

Now on the turntable, "A Renaissance Christmas Celebration" performed by the Waverly Consort on Columbia.

(web pic shows the CD version - same cover though)

This is the one! Such an amazing performance and recording. Top 5 classical recordings for me. He also did a nice album of the Brahms Clarinet Sonatas with Richard Goode on piano.

I do not have any recordings by the Waverly Consort. I was hoping to find some connection between the Waverly Consort and the Waverly Place in Greenwich Village, NYC but no luck so far ...

This new Matsuev/Gergiev recording is now my definitive version! White-hot playing and fantastic sound. (A 192khz/24 bit download--the SACD doesn't come out in the US until Feb.18.)

Now on the turntable, "Voices of the Middle Ages" performed by Capella Antiqua, Munich conducted by Conrad Ruhland on Nonesuch.

Zero ambiance - very dry sound. I'm a spacious reverb kinda guy myself. Still nice music though. :)

I have said it before, but the album covers pictured in this thread are always so delightful. The only thread that can compete is the Jazz thread, for lovely artwork.
