Technically, if you accept George as the 5th Beatle, Giles is the 5th Beatle once removed.

Try not to have too much fun with that. ;)

Weird that you say that because I missed the original controversy. I would challenge Giles on that. I went from believing it was John to believing it was Paul but this is not the place to debate that. There is, in fact, reasonable doubt. Many of the most logical and knowledgeable posters lean towards Paul. It would be unwise to dismiss that fact. Giles could not possibly compete with the combined insights of some of the posters here, he does, however, add a worthwhile opinion.

    Too harsh I think.

Giles does not deserve the 'hate' (I know you are not advocating hate) he gets here. He went to a lot of care to create a mix that seems to appeal to a lot of younger folk. Too much squishing for my taste but I know teenagers and twenty somethings for whom a door has been opened.

We want Giles to be influenced to lighten up on the squash factor and we need to treat him with respect. Much of what he has done is very good.

If you say "beetlejuice" three times he will show up at your house.
Guess what happens when you say "5th Beatle" five times?

If by "squishing" you mean heavy compression at the mastering stage, it has been reported here by fairly knowledgeable people that was not a choice made by Giles, but was forced on him.

Thanks for adding that. I am also referring to compression at the mixing stage. Sergeant Pepper was compressed at some stage on the multis before the stereo mix began.

I think that George Martin has the strongest claim to being The Fifth Beatle for the following reasons:
    • Produced all of the Beatles albums but the last one, giving him a strong influence on their music
    • Played on many of the tracks (such as the "harpischord" solo in "In My Life"), including one album side (the soundtrack for "Yellow Submarine")
    • Provided The Beatles with the technical support that they needed, including the ability to give them the sounds that they wanted.
    • He gave The Beatles the freedom to experiment, rather than trying to shape them into an "conventionally acceptable" group.

Are there fractional Beatles? Like the guy who held the door for them when checking into the Edgewater could be the 45th and 11/16th Beatle.

Allen Klein would assume a negative value, so he could be considered as "Negative-5th Beatle".... ;)

And there are also Imaginary Numbers. So Yoko of course would be the "Imaginary 5th Beatle". ;)

George Martin was a trained classical musician that meant that any idea brought to him could be made better because he could explore all the options instead of being locked into the original idea, you have to know the rules before you can either cooperate with them or break them.

Were his several mistakes forced on him as well?

(And I know some here think he is infallible and believe his obvious mistakes or errors are conscious "artistic" choices...like the not fading out the late "in vain" track on If I Fell, like his father did, or leaving out the Lennon spoken intro on Magical Mystery Tour BluRay, or forgetting that he may have deliberately left out a piano in the LOVE mix of ADITL, but then being lazy and just re-using that mix for Sgt. Pepper 50th Anniversary mix and forgetting it didn't have the piano.)
