Which system? RealD? XpanD? Dolby 3D? Imax 3D? They're all a little different. XpanD has the flickering LCD panel in each eye (requiring a battery in the glasses, which are expensive); RealD has very cheap polarized lenses with the least-effective result, but theater owners like it because it's cost-effective. Dolby 3D uses expensive dichroic lenses and there are some color issues, but it has the best brightness; and Imax 3D can use either RealD or XpanD glasses (branded "Imax"). I personally think the only one that works well is Dolby Vision 3D, where they up the screen brightness by about 400%.

I think Last Jedi would be a very, very difficult film to dimensionalize because there's a ton of camera movement in it from DP Steve Yedlin. It's very tough for the 3D artists to cut out all the various elements when the camera itself is moving through real 3D space. I bet this took 300 artists six months and $30 million to do over in India.

Yeah, after Horner won several Oscars, Cameron realized that the composer was every bit as creative and successful in his field as Cameron was in his, and also came to the conclusion that Horner was the right composer for Titanic. Horner was very, very reluctant to return, but Cameron apologized and convinced him to do it... but only after demanding that Horner not write "a hit song" for the movie. Cameron insisted on only an orchestral score. During the compositional phase, Horner came up with the "My Heart Will Go On" song, got Celine Dion to sing a demo, and played it for Cameron late in the process. By the end of the song, Cameron relented, admitted he was wrong (yet again) and the song proved to be one of the highlights of the film, a massive hit, and won an Oscar for Best Song.

Just plain old RealD. I've noticed it's good at this one theater downtown. A Cinemark. Only one or two bad 3D experiences at other theaters. I just like it. And one point -- not a particularly splashy scene, just talking heads scene -- I just thought:
This feels so real." And I was bein aware of the 3D. Can't wait to see Dolby Vision 3D now, I'll have to scope it out when the next epic rolls around.

BTW, small spoiler: in the entire history of Star Wars, they have never shown a book before. No newspapers, no magazines, not even somebody writing something down on the paper. But in this movie, we have "The Sacred Jedi Texts." You would think these would be digitized and up on the Jedi version of the Web or something.

I don't think Rey is a Solo, Skywalker or a Kenobi. However, who's to say one of her parents weren't offspring of another Jedi? After all, as we know from the novels and such, More Jedi beyond Obi-wan and Yoda survived order 66.

I'm betting that to be the answer to her heritage. Her parents were nobodies probably. However, her grandparents or older ancestors may have been somebody.

In fact, Rian Johnson's non Skywalker trilogy may give us that story. Not only would that open up the Star Wars story to characters beyond the Skywalker clan and friends, but allow them to still include cameos from characters like Yoda, Boba Fett, Vader etc. I would prefer something completely divorced from the past nine movies myself, but something tells me Disney will try and split the difference.

The film is proving controversial to fans, who seem split on whether it's a piece of crap or a shining star in the cinema firmament. I think Disney doesn't give a crap as long as the film makes a spitload of money.

Two interesting articles covering this phenomena just hit the trades:

Variety: Four Reasons Why ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Isn’t One for the Ages

Hollywood Reporter: 'The Last Jedi': An Explanation for Some Fans' Disappointment and Ire

I actually agree with some of these objections and think they bring up some good points. I think the movie had a lot of good in it, and objectively, my take is that some of what they did in the film was to deliberately surprise longtime viewers by going in an unexpected direction. You think Fearless Leader Snoke is going to be the main villain? Surprise! You think Princess Leia is going to die when her ship blows up? Surprise! You think Luke is going to help the new trainee? Surprise! Or maybe Luke risks everything to fight the new villain? Surprise!

I think in that light, the film is not as bad as the fan critics make it out to be. But I do think it's a little disjointed and has a lot of structural and transitional problems (what I call "it's all over the place").

BTW, word is out that Lucas had one big criticism during production: he was reportedly aghast that they shot on 12 soundstages and built over 120 sets for the film. Lucas was baffled and a little stunned that they wouldn't save money and instead just build a small part of the set and then use CGI for the rest...

That's what I'm thinking- she might not necessarily be a Solo, or a Skywalker, or a Kenobi, but somebody in her family was involved with the Jedi.

I went to the cinema last Friday. The movie has some good ideas, but they are not well-executed, and I found the acting quite poor overall. Anyway, what annoyed me the most were the fans who believe they can demand certain things to happen on the screen.
So, up to now, the only post-1983 Star Wars film I have enjoyed is Rogue One.

I saw the Dolby 3D version.........basically because the 2D version was totally sold out last week.
Not a spare seat for 2D all weekend at my usual 4K Vue cinema............and aghast to find only 6 people in total watching the 3D on Friday eveving.
But the separation between the stars and the opening crawl did look very good, but after that I agree that everything just looked natural ...........or maybe the film just took me away from trying to spot the 3D effects whilst trying to concentrate on the film/story.

The more I think about the "final scene" with the kid and his broom saber, the less it makes sense for the Jedi to end. Why try to end the education and training of something that will ALWAYS be present in your universe? Very selfish and short (no) sited, if you ask me.

Reminds me of what Hitchcock did with Psycho. We think the story is following Marion's story, surprise! When Empire came out it had tons of detractors, and made far less money because it was so different from the first star wars. We now see Empire as the masterpiece of the Star Wars movies. I think in time, (more than two of three days worth) this one will change in people's minds as well. My family and I loved it. It was filled with emotion, not over the top comedy, and tons of emphasis on characters and their development.

That Rey/Poe introduction scene in the Falcon seems to set up a possible romance for Episode 9. Also, Rey has a Resistance fighter doll in her living space in The Force Awakens.

Actually it's the Jedi as they were prior and what they became ultimately is what Luke wanted to end and he was right. What he didn't see and it was right in front of his face until Yoda slapped some sense into him, was that Rey could rebuild it differently. At the end he says to Kylo Ren that he will not be the last Jedi. Just last of the old Jedi way of doing things.

What's wrong with the new film is that it has no sense of myth nor mystique, it's messy and disjointed, with no apparent reason for being other than to make money, seemingly no understanding of what made the original films in general so resonant in the first place, and no story of any actual substance to tell. I was literally bored throughout the new film - save for some nice intermittent moments throughout - and all I could think of often times was just how repetitive and derivative it all seemed; the same ships, the same costumes, the same production design, the same scenes jazzed up and remixed, rinse and repeat and cash those cheques... plus the OT's effects work still look better than the CGI in these new films!

If people are enjoying the new SW films, then God bless 'em, but I'm done with it... still waiting on the OT theatricals getting a re-release at some point, but other than that, the book is closed and I'm movin' on like the Littlest Hobo.

Looking forward immensely to Denis Villenueve's Dune...

Right on. I loved the film. Unpredictable. So many emotional shifts (big and small) that I felt like a wreck walking out of the theater, capped with the Luke finale. I felt the same way when I watched Empire for the first time.

The gender dynamics in this film are really interesting. Has anyone else picked up on this? Poe, the new hot Han Solo alpha male, who does everything from his gut, constantly challenges his female superiors and has to be put back in a subservient place, and with very good reason. And yet, both Leia and Holdo admit they nonetheless "like him." The allegory is pretty obvious, especially in light of the recent Hollywood sexual abuse scandal: until women get into more positions of power in corporate and political America, nothing is going to change; and men like Poe need to listen and trust their female bosses more. However, at the end of the day, who would women rather spend their lives with? I guess the Poes and Hans of the world, as long as they know who's the boss. I would like to see a proper feminist critique of the film.

And this dynamic extends to Rey: she's the new hope for the Jedi order for precisely this reason: she can rebuild it differently.

Subverting expectations, yeah - the same as the fate of Dick Halloran in The Shining. It's just that a) I don't find it very original, and b) it doesn't feel very Star Wars. Sure, there are plot twist in the originals, but they don't really mess with the audience in this way. It's becomes a bit too meta for me.

As a matter of interest, where abouts did you see the film with Dolby Cinema? I’m not aware of anyone in Northerm England equipped with either Dolby Cinema or Atmos.

Which is a healthy way to go with any fandom. We may love these films and the franchise, but it doesn't belong to us. It never did. One day you will outgrow it or it'll outgrow you, or both. It's ok to let go. I myself will probably " leave" once Episode IX is done. I'm still conflicted about this one, but I'm generally interested about seeing where the next one goes. Once I stop feeling that way, it'll be time for me to check out and leave it for someone else.

What you won't see from me is coming here and elsewhere ranting that " Dizney murdered my childhood!" And act like petulant children demanding to have their expectations met. I really haven't seen much of that here, but some of the hatred and bile is ridiculous.

My predictions for the next episode is that Poe and Finn will battle it out for the love of Rey. Who will she choose?

My expectations were subverted indeed. I thought it was going to be a good film and boy, did they subvert the heck out of me!

Again, my main beef was the stuff the characters who weren't Rey, Luke and Kylo were doing. Poe sends Finn on some fool's errand and for what? And the whole mission is pointless in the end anyway. And the whole thing could have been skipped if Poe had just been made aware of the plan in the first place. It's a weak plot device. They might as well have left Finn in the coma for this film, cut the worthless casino subplot, and shaved a solid 30 minutes off the run time (can't wait for the "Phantom Edit").

Being "unpredictable" and taking the film in "exciting new directions" is fine, but that doesn't excuse poor screen writing. These characters were let down. They were not given a suitable task to tackle while the real stars of the film got all hot and sweaty via ForceChat©.

I honestly didn't have any expectations going into this film (aside from it being, you know, good, and of course an IG-88 appearance) so don't tell me I'm upset just because Luke didn't shave his beard off and come out swinging. I'm fine with all that (although the rather nonchalant dismissal of Jedi lore, now truly reduced to just a 'hokey religion', was a little troubling).I just expect characters to be given something meaningful to do, not just kill time waiting for Rey to show up and save the day.

What's most insulting is that some in the media say the only reason people like me don't like this film is because I'm secretly against "inclusiveness" or something; like casting a variety of ethnicities is a bullet-proof vest against constructive criticism. Look, I'm not just waving my hand over the whole film and saying, "This is garbage". I save that for "Phantom Menace". No, it's not that bad. There are several elements of the film I like. But there is also an undercurrent of lame story telling devices that ruin it. Rebel ships trapped 10 feet out of firing range for 2 hours was a stupid gimmick. The quest for a 'code breaker' was asinine. Someone should have asked for a re-write.

On a side note - I wonder what them alien nun ladies thought about the burning of the tree? Probably had a **** fit. Hopefully they were able to clean the place back up. Yoda is a disrespectful arsonist.

I apologise if it's not Dolby........I just assumed it was.
My assumption comes from the theatre video promo before every film...........'experience Dolby 4K and surround sound'..............which woooshes round the theatre.

Another one just opened last month too with the release of Justice League at the White Rose centre............IMAX i think.
