I get your drift, and I am not planning to buy one, but the AudioTechnica LP60 - which the Marley is based on - might be low-end but is not complete trash. Made in China does not necessarily mean bad quality, as they make everything from low to high quality, including most notebooks for all brands. If you buy from Amazon themselves you are completely safe when you have to return the item, also here in Europe consumer protection laws seem to be more extensive. So I don't see much difference between a Marley and all the other household items that last a few years but are not repaired but recylced after they are broken (as opposed to landfills).

Having said that, I also prefer buying servicable products at a higher price point which I can expect to last a few decades.

The House of Marley turntable is not based on the AT-LP60. The tonearm design is completely different.

And I have an Aiwa turntable from 1999 that's based on the same chassis on the LP60 and it's still working fine. Obviously I can't expect them all to last a few decades, but at least this one has lasted almost two decades!

I wonder if there are or aren't some really cheap deals on a discontinued Pro-Ject Essential II over "your way"? A III would be nicer, or course.

What would a Denon DP-300f or Audio-Technica AT-LP3 run in Austria? (In case she would feel "safer" with an automatic. They sometimes develop the speed issues, too.)

That House of Marley deck is overpriced. As noted above, there are plenty of decent, entry-level turntables. The AT LP-120 is a quality example. While I would not recommend the less expensive AT-LP60 for your friend, it was perfect for my daughter who has zero interest in sound quality and uses a JBL Flip 3 for her "speakers."

Here's a picture of my daughter's AT-LP60 playing my original UK DECCA LP pressing of Beggars Banquet that I posted on another site (the one that would recommend you re-build a Dual 1219).

Wow great thread. At the very low end check out the Fluance RT-80 or 81 for a functional entry level deck. Keep your receipt in case of speed issues.

Probably right. Good find. Although that site doesn't provide full bill of lading info without subscription to fully verify, you can glean a bit from Google caches etc to match turntable shipments to that manufacturer. Shenzhen Yixinfa Electronics, also going by "Purely Audio Group", Pingxi, also makes headphones for Cyber Acoustics, and ships to Harman Group, and more to be discovered. They don't advertise as turntable manufacturer.

Marley gets "Smile Jamaica" headphones from Shenzhen Yixinfa, but also other "Smile Jamaica" headphones come from Cotron, Taiwan. Many other Chinese suppliers are discoverable. Also, Chinese make HTML as poorly as they make turntables; what was supposed to be blurred out on this shipping site: House Of Marley Llc进口数据及联系方式-外贸邦 without a subscription:

Just another trendsetter, the same business model where the audio conglomerate buys up legacy audio names, closes down domestic manufacturing and talent, and ships spec-made Chinese product to customers (and ships empty cargo containers back to China). At least Marley isn't also handing over any intellectual property and designs for the Chinese to counterfeit.

Thank you for the additional information regarding the OEM manufacturers of the Marley audio equipment! To glean more information, the cost to access Panjiva's data is at least $150 USD/month in a subscription basis, which the website is mainly designed for government agencies and big private firms. As of right now, I'm not able to discern the specific OEM factory that made the "Stir It Up" player under (model number is EM-JT000-SB) with my Google-fu skills. I'm willing to bet Tim Hortons' Timbits that it's made at Shenzhen, the same city where the infamous suitcase and very-low end players are manufactured.

The Marley turntable looks to me like a very cheap low end version of the ubiquitous Taiwan design that is sold as the Fluance RT-80/81, Teac TN-350-MB, DENON DP-300f, etc. etc. Some of these the higher end ones are actually very nice, but they have speed stability issues. The Marley looks like the super cheapest bottom of the line version.
