no big deal. people like what they like. my uncle refused to listen to anyone that wasn't named Flatt or Scruggs. he seemed happy enough, well he was stoned most the time but happy. and we are talking "truly great" not just good. when was your last truly great meal?
Emilie Autumn - Fight Like A Girl. Hard to ignore the passion, ambition, and attention to detail whether you apppreciate the style or not.
Shinedown Leave A Whisper from 2003. It's not critically acclaimed like an Amy Winehouse album, but it rocks all the way though and I like it all the way through.
THAT WAS 24 YEARS AGO! AS A NIRVANA FAN, YOU COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING GREAT SINCE THEN?! REALLY?! CHECK OUT REDD KROSS, THE MELVINS, MUDHONEY, AND A MILLION OTHER BANDS. I'M THE BIGGEST NIRVANA FAN IN THE WORLD, BUT COME ON! So much has happened in th he underground world since Nirvana. Bob Mould, Superchunk, Supersuckers, etc...
or the last band to put out a great album. The question wasn't "what's the greatest album of all time". Like someone else said, if the last greatest album you heard came out 50 years ago, you're not a fan of music. You just like a couple bands.
I'll likely be viewed by many as an Old Fuddy-Duddy, but, while there have been a lot of very good albums released in the interim (such as from Wilco, Beck, Arcade Fire, Elliott Smith, Aimee Mann, Radiohead and Eminem), I think the last truly great album was Nirvana's "Nevermind" (1991).
The most recent, rather than the last, because great albums are still going to come out: Just the Beginning by Grace VanderWaal, November 2017.
To me, the last truly great album released. Lots of good albums have been released, but to me, not great. Yeah, sound is a little flat, but the songs are killer. Got it on vinyl, which is better than the cd.
Good album this one, I never thought Liam could put something better than his brother.. The world has gone crazy..
I keep Moth Boys by Spector as my avatar here because for me, it is the most recent really great album released. When something else tops it for me, I’ll change it.
I just took a cursory glance at my Top 100 list I posted here in 2013. These are just the post-OK Computer albums (in the order in which they appear) from it that I said both then and now are truly great. A few of these might just be a "me" thing but for the most part these are universally acclaimed albums that will go down in history as being "truly great." I forgive you if you are only a classic rock person and don't "get" the significance of an album like Donuts or Dig Me Out. Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea Agnes Obel - Philharmonics Boards Of Canada - Music Has The Right To Children The Avalanches - Since I Left You Build To Spill - Keep It Like A Secret Biosphere - Substrata J Dilla - Donuts William Basinski - The Disintegration Loops GAS- Pop Phopshorescent - Aw Come Aw Wry Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion Plastikman - Consumed Sleater-Kinney - Dig Me Out
Seeing people say there's been no truly great album since 17-24-30 years ago troubles me. Here's two truly great ones from the last 12 months: Monster Mike Welch & Mike Ledbetter - Right Place, Right Time Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real - Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real
True. But plenty of the replies in this thread are treating it as if there will never again be a great album, thus I felt I had to clarify my answer.
The difficulty with this thread is the definition of "truly great". Means different things for different people. What if rephrased to "Name any album released the last 10 years that would qualify on your personal top 20 greatest albums list". Hm, maybe I should start that thread.
