Mind you, I'm talking about reception in my homeland - many of those had better reception in the UK and the US, while they were panned in Austria and Germany.

I think most of thsoe mentioned aren't underrated as much as unknown, or lesser known than they should be.

I predict the consensus 'Heaven's Gate' will forever vary betwen 'bloated tripe' and 'masterpiece'. (I think its somewhere in between, and maybe with some judicious editing and a digital removal of some of the dust so some of the scenes could actually be, you know, viewed, I might have a higher opinion)

I never thought of it as poorly rated, giving ul that it has a cult following, has a 7.6 on IMDB. Then again, it seems to be rated higher by general audiences than critics.

Not a perfect movie, but immensely entertaining for me, plus Bruce Dern AND Brother Theodore are in it.

easy one for me, the single most under-rated movie of all time, should have won a ton of awards in every category.

The Fog by John Carpenter. The plot is OK, and the movie isn't particularly *scary* but holy cow it pegs the creep-o-meter. The opening scenes showing the empty town at midnight are some of the eeriest things ever shot on film. This film could be a primer on creating atmosphere.

Local Hero. Almost nobody I talk to knows this film. It's fantastic. The plot is simple. It's quiet. It isn't rip-roaring funny, but it's funny. It's beautifully shot. Mark Knopfler does a soundtrack that so many people mimicked afterwards that it became an 80's cliche. One of my all time favorites.

Station Agent. Three significantly different people, each struggling with their own sort of alienation from society, cross paths, to their benefit, individually and collectively. Humorous and poignant.

JAMES WOODS !! Shame he got blacklisted by those Hollywood D***bags.

JIM BELUSHI !! When he was a great actor.

OLIVER STONE !! Still hungry, still fierce and uncompromising.

JOHN SAVAGE !! Talk about underrated .....

This movie is so much better than the somewhat similar themed Under Fire and it feels like a more down to earth relative of Apocalypse Now.

:righton: The Fog was foremost in my mind as I scrolled through this thread. It gets overlooked due to being overpowered by Halloween, Escape from New York and The Thing. I think it has aged much better than Escape.

Nice choice. If you can get past the fact that none of the characters are developed at all, you're in for a spooky ride. I loved the Hitchcock shot of the top of the lighthouse.

I kinda liked "Looking For Comedy In The Muslim World" but it disappeared
faster than a Beatles 'butcher' "Yesterday & Today" LP at a Woolco in 1966!
And for some reason it's been difficult to find "The Muse" lately too...
