Does anyone like these especially? I find them grating but maybe it's because I'm American. "Something Happened To Me Yesterday" by the Stones and the Kinks ones bother me particularly. I like Traffic's "Berkshire Poppies" but maybe that doesn't qualify? Let's not even get into Paul's music hall penchant ;)
    Thanks!

Neither love 'em nor hate 'em.

I take 'em as they come, like some, not others. But even the ones I don't like . . . I don't dislike.

    Oh I love them.

Queen were pretty good with this type of song as well.

It's a case by case thing for me. Some artists incorporate music hall very well (The Kinks) whereas others (Paul McCartney) tend to make them grating and over-the-top.

If they're good, yes! Like this one, for instance...

The lyrics on this elevate it out of mere "music hall"! Andy's best lyrically, and that's saying something. Maybe my fave UK-based lyricist... sorry, Ray and Pete!

As others already wrote, a case by case basis... not sure if I like any of Macca's music hall homages, though... have to muse about that...

    Love them.
    My five favorites -
    Ray Davies
    Paul McCartney
Stones at times before Beggar's Banquet
Freddie Mercury's contributions to Queen albums
And of course American Harry Nilsson

Just part of the diverse 1960s pop landscape. At no other time was the top 40 likely to have Indian raga(ish), bossa-nova, English Music Hall, garage rock, TV show theme song, soul and something bluesy on it at the same time. It is mind blowing to look at the charts from those years. Twee, Noel Coward type songs are part of what makes the 60s great.

Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass had several top 40 hits in the 1960's. This one reached number 7 on the charts in 1965.

"Something Happened To Me Yesterday" was particularly unbearable. The Stones going down a bling alley, trying to be the Richmond Beatles.
The Beatles and Kinks did it well though.

I don't think Mother's Lament is Cream's finest moment, by any stretch...English music hall music just isn't my cup of tea.

Clever lyrics were a feature of music hall though.

Sorry, I meant, is there a specifically American stylistic equivalent?

Nilsson is a good answer. Vaudeville is American music hall.

Perhaps it's that Mungo Jerry "In the Summertime" type song, sort of jugband-y?

There's vo-de-oh-do 20s/30s style music pastiches that American bands did in the 60s - e.g. "Magnolia Simms" by the Monkees, "Wasn't It a Bit Like Now" by the Association, "Just Like Gene Autry" by Moby Grape. There's a lot of that stuff! I don't know if it's quite the same though, the British music hall stuff is more Victorian and Edwardian.

I love the Kinks songs in this vein. Particularly stuff like Autumn Almanac, Mr. Pleasant, Harry Rag, Skin And Bone, and Tin Soldier Man.
Also enjoy the Beatles When I'm 64 and McCartney's solo You Gave Me The Answer and Baby's Request.
