I've bought several items from Discogs, and for the most part have been very pleased. However, I refuse to buy anything that says it comes from The Russian Federation. Am I being prudent, or am I being too judgmental based of my fears of getting "boots"?

Nope - You aren't too judgmental.
It's not illegal in Russia to sell bootlegs and if the person that buys a product doesn't know that it's a fake who else will know that?
Oddly enough I had a dream about russian Beatles albums two days ago. Looked interesting as they had all different letters on them.

I have never had any luck with anything I purchased from the Russian Federation. I use to order CDs on eBay fairly often and the ones I received from the Russian Federation were always a problem.

I use Discogs a lot and I avoid every seller from Russia. I bought some "unofficial" CDs from Russia a few years ago and I was very pleased with everyone I did business with but there's too many fakes coming from there for me to take a chance with official releases.

I picked up one of those Lana Del Ray Russian boots of her early stuff in a store that shouldn't be stocking it, and I think they've gone back to pressing music onto old x-ray films. At least they took my return.

Well, I’ve bought a few vinyl items from a couple of Russian sellers and they were perfect. I have no experience buying CD’s from there...

I’ve been looking at some McCartney / Wings CD’s. The Russian Federation always seems to have the best prices and lots of copies available. Hmmm.......

Yep. Same here. Against my better judgement, this year I purchased a CD supposedly "located in Japan" shipped via Moscow. Shipped via Moscow? Why not just ship it via the North Pole? It would have been quicker, cheaper and probably legit.

Now I am trying to get my money back.

Fool me once on the Russian Federation, SHAME ON ME.

If it's too cheap to be reasonable... it probably is. This broad paint brushing technique being applied here is unreasonable. I've both purchased and sold to the Russian Federation with zero problems so far. The reason is simple, if the seller is selling an actual within used market value disc with 100%, or very near 100%, positive feedback they're most likely a safe bet and not a CD-R purveyor. If I'm stupid enough to send an expensive CD purchase a buyer has bought from me with no tracking to a foreign country, meaning outside of N. America, well that's on me.

Yeah, I know the feeling. I have ordered several from Russia through eBay. They were no cheaper then anywhere else and being new to the internet at the time I didn’t know to look for the location first. I wouldn’t know which location until after I won the bid and needed the address to mail the money order.

Every time the CDs looked cheap and most of the CDs didn’t even fit in the jewel case. The last one looked like the booklet was photocopied. It was because of this that I started paying close attention to where I was buying things from.

You gotta love it when the photocopied booklet staples show up!

I (unknowingly) purchased a Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood compilation from a seller in Russia. The booklet and tray liner text was laser sharp, but the CD looked slightly different from other Rhino CDs. I’m not sure if it’s legit.

I've purchased several cd's from Russia off of ebay.

All arrived rather slowly but were the very good quality.

  19. It's likely not. For some reason Russian counterfeiters love Nancy Sinatra CDs - most of her Sundazed CDs have been counterfeited and circulate on eBay. I just ended up with one last month. The Russians at least have discerning tastes. They were also likely responsible for keeping some rare CDs in circulation - Dylan's self-titled album was basically taken out of print for years on CD and the Russians counterfeited it.

Frankly, I blame Nancy herself for keeping most of her catalog out of print on CD all these years.

I've never bought anything from a Russian seller. But it seems whenever I see what they want for their vinyl, it's ridiculously higher than any other territory.

I would be very wary about buying anything from Russia. I did get one CD from there (on Discogs) that was O.K., though.

China can be a problem, too. They know that if they rip off anyone in the West, there is no way to crack down. I bought a bass flute from the Chinese eBay, called dhgate dot com. I never got it, and the website just said that it was too bad. Had the seller been in the West, I could have got the police to help.

I say your fears are justified, I've seen far too many obvious fakes on eBay by russian sellers. Same with the Chinese.

  24. The Russians at least know what they are doing when they counterfeit CDs. They pick reputable versions and occasionally add "bonus" tracks to the original CD's clone, often picking out of print and desirable CDs. They even usually add CD titles on the disc. The Chinese just counterfeit any popular group's latest release in poor quality.

You guys are so hard the reputable Russian sellers with your broad sweeping paint brushes. I've bought from at least 3 Russian sellers of legitimate CD's and only one forger making it 4 sellers. The 3 packaged perfectly with accurate grading to boot.
