It's just a coincidence that my funniest movies star Peter Sellers.

Dr. Strangelove (1964) is insane. Clinically insane. And hilarious. Especially General Jack D. Ripper's speech about flouridated water and denying women his essence. I used to see this film in repertory screenings, and it never failed to floor me.

The Party (1968) could almost be the story of my life. How hard can you push a one-joke idea? Blake Edwards's most sustained comedy about the movie business.

Lots of funny movies but one in particular that comes to mind is an 80s one called Big Business. Lily Tomlin and Bette Midler play dual roles as sisters in two sets of twins with very different backgrounds and upbringing. Both Tomlin and Midler are great, each playing 2 characters with such different personalities. They all end up at the Plaza Hotel trying to support/fight a major business deal at a shareholders meeting.

Young Frankenstein and The Princess Bride have to be tied for me. I still find them humorous even after all these years.

While I love a good laugh (admittedly a rather stupid claim), most comedies do not make me laugh.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The script is crammed full of jokes. The way the jokes come back later on is so ingenious, that it turns out to be a very well-thought out script. The first time I saw it, I was really angry about the ending though. I thought it was a real cop-out to end the film right before the inevitable fight scene. (Sorry, spoiler.) But when you think about it, how else would a Monty Python movie end? So many people - even casual fans of MP - can quote at least one joke from this movie. Whether it be about the coconuts, the three questions, the killer rabbit, the Black Knight or (for hard-core fans) Castle Anthrax, this movie has lived on through the years.

Like the OP, I first thought of Peter Sellers: Being There

Any Marx Brothers up to “A Day At The Races”.

Chaplin up through “The Kid”. (These are my favorites, but there’s lots to love after that, too.)
