I adore Yet Another Movie, I don't like the production but the song itself is stunning IMO.

Not turning away from the pale and downtrodden isn't universal but topical? Explain me please.

Maybe they can reissue those "rarities" box sets but use the actual available master tapes instead of grabbing stuff from old bootlegs? I feel bad for people who paid money for those.

5.1 of animals. Bonus disc animals tour concert video ... or wish you were here tour concert video, seeing as though it started with two animals songs.
No 75 disc set with fuzzy dice, stickers or bottles of authentic sweat ....

I don't know if I can pin it down, honestly. At best, I'd explain it as a song that offers platitudes that seem to be about the poor, the voiceless, etc. but it's kind of signifying nothing.

It's like... ok, what's the problem? Do they state the problem? Do they offer a solution (other than "no more turning away")? It just feels like empty gesturing towards some mythical "little people" who need compassion... because reasons. And we should definitely do a thing... Because reasons. Did I mention the little people?

Again, it may just be how it resonates with me and others are welcome to disagree. It's still a good song musically and, in the hands of a better lyricist, the idea could probably be conveyed with a bit more substance and craft, but I don't feel it is here.

Compare that to "Echoes" and its lyrics about recognizing yourself in others. That can be about showing some respect to a waitress at lunch or it can be about having sympathy for a drug addict in dire straits, etc. It works on multiple levels and can serve a social commentary angle if you want it to, but it's not chained to that interpretation. I'd also venture to suggest that, if you're going to chain your writing to a social cause or observation, you'd best be damned crafty about it. That last point is probably what I dislike the most about "The Tide is Turning" or "On the Turning Away." I don't feel like either work on an "art" level.

Not a vinyl/turntable owner here, but depending on price, may well be interested if the hardback book is of worth.

It seems pretty clear to me. The problem stated is that we tend to ignore the homeless. The solution? Get involved. It's not enough just to stand and stare.

i think post waters floyd is unfairly criticised. I like momentary lapse and division bell. i thought turning away was the high point of the album.
i think it would have been silly to expect it to sound like seventies floyd.
i often think folks that hate those albums are too caught up in the dave vs roger junk lol

Agree the 100% the tune has no literary depth whatsoever beyond some vaguely socialist help-the-poor trope. But really, comparing Dave to Roger as a lyricist on any level is silly, despite some good efforts from the former and some eye rolling whiffs from the latter. My major takeway from On the Turning Away is that it's Wish You Were Here segueing into The Final Cut and closing with Comfortably Numb. Great tune in any case! (My "worthy AMLOR tunes" list also includes Learning to Fly, One Slip, and Sorrow, with Dogs of War being #1 on my Worst Floyd Ever scorecard.)

    While we're discussing momentary ...
When the album came out i remember reading that it had been rejected by the record company initially and they were told to floyd it up a bit. Does anyone know if this is at all true.

Not to sound too uppity over that comment but David was probably offering solutions like donating millions to help the homeless. The man has helped massively with homelessness.

At first, that's how I would have interpreted it. I actually pulled up the lyrics before writing my post just to make sure there wasn't something in there that would have "refuted" by dislike for the lyric, and honestly found it's both too direct and too indirect at the same time. It's like someone started to write a lyric about the homeless and went, "Oh, ****, this is Pink Floyd and Waters is out... We can't be that direct!" and then added some vague, floaty language to dilute things. Again, just my take.

I actually love both A Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell. I make no excuses for either. And, to really bring out the torches and pitchforks, while I don't have a lot of time for "On the Turning Away," I actually like "Dogs of War." :hide:

Funny enough, even though "Dogs of War" suffers from a lot of the same failings as "On the Turning..." in theory, it almost works in a "hyperbolic metal lyric" type of way. I also dig the Floyd doing a good '80s flavored blues workout. Color me strange...

Waters and Mason as Pink Floyd at Glastonbury.
I would go. Not probable, but both said recently they would love to do it.

Any chance remastered CD version box set with extra tracks? Vinyl great but really enjoy a new CD package of PULSE.

I highly doubt that Gilmour said he'd play again as Pink Floyd let alone love to do it. Do you have a reliable source for this?

The CD reissue of PULSE already came out in 2016, IIRC.

They've released some early live stuff in the recent big box, one "complete" dsotm show over the Immersion boxes + EY and one Wall show.
The Early Years is kind of an equivalent to several of Dylan's Bootleg Series releases.
I don't think they have much interest in releasing more archival live shows, which is a shame.
A download series like Springsteen's archive releases would be one possibility. However, as a Springsteen (and Floyd) bootleg collector, I would be concerned that the fans have already done a better job of restoring the recordings than the officials will do. Many of the Springsteen shows are no better (or clearly worse) than the best boots. The Early Years has had a similar criticism (not trying to reopen debate, just saying).
I'd buy 1-2 shows from each PF tour on general principle, especially if a good Animals show was released, but until then, @rontoon and others have already given me more than I need.
