Haven’t seen anything about a new rp3 but surely there should be a new one soon? Should I hold out do you think or take the plunge on the current rp3?

If I knew I could get a perfect original planar 2 then I’d be more than happy but it’s hard to find one that is good as new.

The current Planar 3 was just introduced in 2016. You'll probably have to wait quite awhile for the next update :)

Are you aware of how the Rega lineup goes?

They spend 2 years on the design of the new Planars. The replacement for the 8 & 10 haven't even been released. Still more work to do on the current series. I doubt they'll even think about a new version of the 3 for another 4 to 5 years.

As Phxjohn says, Rega has come a long way. I just bought my 4th Rega table, a 2017 Planar 2 and I couldnt be happier with the sound. I highly reco this table, or really, ANY Rega table. The value is oustanding.

The current version of the '3' is the Planar 3 or 'P3' NOT RP3.

There's another current "Which turntable should I buy" thread where resident Rega expert KT88 says the latest Planar 3 is the best so far. I guess any plans for new Rega models would have been revealed at the recent Hifi shows, like Bristol over here.

I bought the P3 last year (white plinth, red looks amazing) and have loved it ever since. The upgrade path is a lot of fun should you choose it.

Buy a cork mat though, the felt leaves too much mess.

Got mine with the Rega Exact instead of the Elys cartridge. Also have the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC and while I am happy I bought it for used/coountry records the P3 is head and shoulders better. Read the reviews and also go to you tube, you will be ordering one in no time.

Yes I'm very aware. The original planar 2 meant a lot to me as my parents had one while I was growing up, until my mum one day took it to the rubbish dump because the stylus was broken!!

Okay but there is no new RP3 coming soon. Just so you know.

There are some good used P6's around - a two year old one went for £499 on eBay uk today, albeit needing a new cart but otherwise looking in great shape.

  17. P6 6s only came out last year.....????

I agree with the above sentiments. Rega put huge time, effort and money into R&D, so they cannot simply market new or radically upgraded models on a biennial basis.
I would buy now. P6 if you can afford it, P3 if budget is a bit tighter.

Very best of luck, and keep us updated.

    The P6 hasn't been out 2 years - perhaps was an Rp6?

Hasn’t it been just a few months that people in the US have actually been able to pick one up?

  23. Yes the P6 came out this past Fall.

    • Planar 3 (1977-2000) - Rega R200 tonearm (manufactured by Acos). Rega RB300 tonearm introduced in 1983
    • P3 (2000-2007) - Option with brightly-colored, high-gloss plinths
    • P3-24 (2007-2012) - Revised Rega RB301 tonearm and incorporation of 24V motor from P5 and P7 as standard
    • RP3 (2012-2016) - Addition of (black) phenolic braces and revised RB303 tonearm
    • Planar 3 (2016-) - Revised RB330 tonearm and Silver top brace
    The older Planar 3 (1977-2000) and the P3 (2000-2007) came with the Premotec 9904 111 31813 110V motor.

The P3-24 (2007-2012), RP3 (2012-2016) and current Planar 3 (2016- ) came with the Premotec 9904 111 31823 24V motor. I'm not sure you can get these from anywhere but Rega, other than second hand somewhere. A quick google threw up no answers.

    Thanks for the replies.

I'm going to buy a new planar 3.

I have mission 752 speakers. At the moment I use a pioneer a227 amp but am thinking of getting either a pioneer a30 or a vintage 1972 Sansui AU505.. any thoughts on whether it's worth swapping my current amp for either of these with my proposed 752 speaker/planar 3 combo?
