The Waltons is an American television series created by Earl Hamner, Jr., based on his book Spencer's Mountain and a 1963 film of the same name, about a family in rural Virginia during the Great Depression and World War II.

The television movie The Homecoming: A Christmas Story was broadcast on December 19, 1971.[1] Based on its success, the CBStelevision network ordered one season of episodes based on the same characters and that became the television series The Waltons.[2] Beginning in September 1972, the series subsequently aired on CBS for nine seasons. After the series was canceled by CBS in 1981, NBC aired three television movie sequels in 1982, with three more in the 1990s on CBS. The Waltons was produced by Lorimar Productions and distributed by Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution in syndication.

---- I personally love The Waltons I think it gets lumped in with Little House on the Prairie, but I find The Waltons not as cheesy

I feel like once Will Geer passed away and Ellen Corby suffered her stroke the show fell hard.

even with Richard Thomas leaving i felt the show would still be ok

I watched it religiously as a young kid. I don’t remember too much about it, but always liked the end: “goodnight John Boy”, “goodnight Sue Ellen” etc. Earl Hamner produced it as I recall. Decent show.

If I land on a show today, I stop and watch til the end. Stories are what count. CGI should be the icing not the reverse.

I remember that one.... shocked the hell out of me that Ben would defy his Daddy like that.

Great show, but it probably went 2 or 3 seasons too long. I remember one latter day episode that dealt with a poltergeist in the house.

It definitely went on too long. Too many important characters either died or left the series. It limped its way to the end.

The last seasons are pretty rough, from what I've seen. Too many characters gone, and the kids grew up to be pretty bad actors. The one thing I like about the later seasons is Corabeth. She turned in to a real hoot!
Early on, the show was great. Great stories and humor. Maybe it's an unfair comparison, but I far prefer it to Little House.

Yea when you have the family occasionally hearing from Olivia down in Arizona or wherever and John-Boy is long gone, it is time to call it quits.

I do remember one where Jason is leading a platoon during the final days of WWII (wasn't he a Conscientious Objector?) and they have to talk to a German soldier who does not believe the war is over. Not bad and a helluva change from Walton's Mountain where the biggest danger was overindulging in Papa's Recipe.

IIRC he used John-Boy's car to drive her. Without telling JB.

I used to watch The Waltons when I was a kid. I'd be interested in revisiting it again if it showed up on a streaming channel somewhere. Not sure I want to buy the DVDs.

Am I making this up or was there an episode involving an Indian burial ground?

somehow John didn't beat his ass. I was expecting him too.

My money would be on Ben. JB was the peacnik type. Words not fists. But Ben liked doing hard work with his hands.
