Joni, Paul Simon, Dylan, Van, James Taylor. Those are the first that come to mind. Oh, wait, I forgot Emmylou and Lucinda.

  2. Just about the only one in this category for me is Dylan.

Automatic only for that rarest of occasions: newly exhumed material from the usual suspects. VU stuff, the Some Girls bonus disc, Zep outtakes, and new JHE live shows f'rinstance. That's about it.

The same exact thing for me, as did not care for the single released from that album and the poor reviews of the album had me skipping it. Loved everything since 'Bloodflowers' though.

Quite a few, with the bolded ones being particularly exciting for me:
    • Fiona Apple
    • Paul Heaton (Housemartins/Beautiful South/solo, solo w/Jacqui Abbott)
    • Leonard Cohen (well, used to...)
    • Lloyd Cole
    • Elvis Costello
    • Neil Finn/Crowded House
    • Bob Dylan
    • Donald Fagen/Steely Dan
    • John Fogerty
    • Thea Gilmore
    • Jackie Greene
    • John Hiatt
    • Peter Himmelman
    • Billy Joel (well, if there were any more material...)
    • Elton John
    • Lake Street Dive
    • Toby Lightman
    • James McMurtry
    • Rhett Miller/Old 97s
    • Ocean Colour Scene
    • Lindi Ortega
    • Joan Osborne
    • Graham Parker
    • David Gilmour/Pink Floyd (not Roger solo, tho)
    • Robert Plant
    • Tristan Prettyman
    • Josh Ritter
    • Rolling Stones
    • Paul Simon
    • Bruce Springsteen
    • Cat Stevens/Yusuf (buying the new stuff, but don't have all the canon releases)
    • Styx (!). Guilty pleasure from my youth, but their new album is boatloads of fun...
    • Richard Thompson
    • The Who/Pete Townshend (if there ever were new releases...)
    • K.T. Tunstall
    • Paul Weller
    • John/Paul/George/Ringo (Julian, too) - no bold for John & George because, well...

Too many but I may be turning a corner in this. A few include:
    Kylie Minogue
    Olivia Newton John
    McCartney
    Elton
    Bowie
    Kate Bush
    Pet Shop Boys
    Who
And if I was to look that list would be much bigger. Then there's all the bands and singers that technically aren't making new stuff but still manage to push stuff out in either new packaging with bonus tracks, etc etc such as The Beatles for example.

With my automatic purchase of the new Ray LaMontagne album, he's made my list of "auto buy" artists. I've dropped several in the last few years (Tori Amos, Bjork, Ryan Adams, Belle and Sebastian, Jewel), so my list stands like so:

    Rolling Stones
    Fiona Apple
    The National
    Bon Iver
    Ray LaMontagne
    Damien Rice
    Marcus Mumford
    Florence + the Machine
+ Peter Gabriel and Hozier if either one ever releases another album

  14. Just about every artist that I love has been bumped from the auto buy list. Nothing against the artist but all of them have released so-so albums and also there's just so much damn good music around aside from my favorites that I want to discover.

Bob Dylan, Neil Young & The Stones would have all fitted in that category at one time , but I'm getting a bit more selective these days

I have a recent problem, I am behind! Until this past year I always bought new releases by Wilco, Okkervil River, The Decemberists, Yo La Tengo (and others), but I find myself not having gotten any of those 4 ... if I get some money this coming month I'll get them, certainly sometime this summer
