It was quite a thrill. The other two times I was there was the previous year seeing garcia and Saunders and hot tuna right after bob steeler joined. At the garcia show I had the opportunity for a short chat will Billy k between sets.
Maybe briefly a long time ago. My brother lived there from 72-78 in various places. I visited him when he was in Pacifica, cotati and the haight. I was fortunate to catch some great music every time.
Promised Land>Bertha>Greatest Story from 7-31-73. Check out Keith's solo on Promised Land. Really far out stuff: www.archive.org/details/gd1973-07-31.133927.aud.moore.berger.flac16/gd1973-07-31d3t01.flac Starts at 1:40 if you are so inclined. Then check out Garcia's fills behind the last verse.
Wow! Bertha from Rochester NY, 7/2/87 Silver stadium! It’s very good! So much gusto! Jerry is very into it. I saw DSO there twice in recent summers. Cool place.
Listened to 2/27/77 Santa Barbara yesterday after the exchange here about it (maybe) not being available as a board. A good show but without the big jams of the previous night. Scarlet is one of the last stand-alone versions and St. Stephen is one of a few from this era without Not Fade Away in the middle. Terrapin is an early version without most of the backing vocals and leads to Morning Dew which is good but not a patch on the famous May 1977 versions.
Silver Stadium? It was torn down in the late 90's. Saw 87 show and 88 there. A few "onlys" for me at that place... Only time I caught "Believe it or Not"... Only Green Onions! Only place I saw Garcia wearing a sport coat!
Libba Cotten was a local legend who moved here to Syracuse in the 80's, was already in her 90's but left an indelible mark. There is a little grove dedicated to her along with a beautiful statue on the southside where she lived with her daughter. Elizabeth Cotten- Oh Babe, It Ain't No Lie
That’s a hot show. I caught the ‘88 show there, which was a great one at a fine venue. Jerry in a sports coat!
Foxboro 90, double encore. I can't remember what the first was--Heaven's Door? Whatever it was I took the opportunity to edge for the exit and missed WBYGN.
I think I am finally getting 29 December '77/DP10. I have always thought that the Playing was, well, nice enough. I listened to it yesterday while on the tram and then at a park in the morning sunshine. It made a lot more sense. I love the Bird Song on that - Jerry just raging on an acoustic for a few minutes.
Me as well. Is wasn't damp, it was colossally soaking. It's as wet as I've ever been in public. Rivers of mud running past my feet and cueballs made of styrofoam.
A while back some people were speculating on shows performed under the influence. There's some highly suspicious banter on 1-17-68, Carousel Ballroom (which also seems to be the first (and shortest) extant live 'Dark Star.')
I haven't heard that show in years but I recall that it's really casual. Long breaks between songs and things like that. I may be making that up but, if my memory is correct, it has that vibe of an unfocussed show, so to speak.
Dipping back into 12/17/71 Albuquerque (Dave’s 26) for a second listen. Great sonically and musically, a fine release of a show (or two shows, actually) that these ears hadn’t previously heard. Was on the fence between replaying this or 11/6/77 tonight and probably couldn’t have gone wrong, but am feeling fine about my decision.
