When I think of the people who died during war it always leaves me a bit hurt in my heart, irregardless of who was fighting who or why.
To the best of my knowledge most countries commemorate the fallen with a day of reflection.
On these days what are the songs that tap on your heart and mind.
    For me
And the band played Waltzing Matilda - the pogues or eric bogle
    The grave - Don Mclean
    Paschendale - Iron Maiden
tend to sit in my conscience

Please don't get political, just calmly and thoughtfully post the songs that effect you when thinking of these things.
    Cheers

Johnny Cash's version is best known but I've always had affection for the Peter LaFarge original.

The mentioned "And the band played Waltzing Matilda" is to me, one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. I have a John McDermott CD titled Remembrance with that and many other such songs.
Another one I always think of, having grown up when the men, and some women, were dying in Vietnam, is "The Ballad Of The Green Berets".

Whenever someone has one of those saddest songs threads that is always my choice ... still effects me after 30 or more years of hearing it

Old Pennsylvania boy myself and did much of my history major on the American Civil War:

    “Battle Hymn of the Republic”
    “Amazing Grace”
    “Battle Cry of Freedom”
    “Just Before the Battle, Mother”

Others inspired by World War II—both the Allies and German forces loved these songs:
    “Lili Marlene”
“Silent Night” (“Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht”)

And one that always comes up now and on Independence Day that I cannot ******* stand:

“I’m Proud to be an American”

RONEN BEN TAL - THE LAST MORNING

    And a terrible cold
    Only the silence echoes him
The last morning hardens the air
Up there they wait for him
A hand ... only you die alone
You no longer need anyone then
You go back to the ground, turn into dirt
