My list would include Jimi, The Doors, George Harrison, Boston, Van Halen, The Cars, The B-52's, Missing Persons, Wendy & Lisa, Seal, Pearl Jam, Bush, Candlebox and Shinedown.

I disagree with well over half the nominations in this thread. I don't think it would be productive to list them all.

I know All Things Must Pass was not George Harrison's first solo album but I think most people regard it as his first serious rock album, hence it almost qualifies. It's rare to encounter someone who does not consider All things Must Pass to be his best.

He's never bettered it, and it's never seemed like he's tried to.

    Thx for tip.
CTA does sound much better than followup, and like been said, doesn’t require remix.

Difference in sound can be attributed to the different engineering team that worked on each album.
CTA - Fred Catero (the same guy who engineered Blood, Sweat & Tears album.
Chicago (II) - Donald Puluse, Chris Hinshaw, Brian Ross-Myring

So the Stones never bettered their debut album?
And the Who never bettered My Generation. Really??

Amazed that nobody had mentioned The Doors or Led Zeppelin until now. Talking Heads as well; but not quite as surprised as by either The Doors or Zeppelin. Maybe it's a generational thing.

Might have missed it as I'm shocked it hasn't been mentioned... Crosby, Stills & Nash self titled.

Jethro Tull's - This Was. In my opinion an absolute classic; as well as my favorite Tull. After This Was; Mick Abrahams left the group and the direction changed.

Fantastic album throughout, and a perfect example of what the OP asked for.
