I absolutely love the rollicking 'When I Get Home'. The only track I would occasionally skip would be 'Tell Me Why', but it's only 2:09. Otherwise a perfect album, and most days I consider it their finest work.

 

Sort of apropos to this thread... I play in an occasional Beatles cover band. For a particular event coming up in a couple of weeks we've worked up a short set of songs from AHDN - all Lennon numbers. The set is: Tell Me Why, If I Fell, You Can't Do That, and A Hard Day's Night. They're all done, semi-acoustically, that is, acoustic guitar, electric 12-string guitar (me), electric bass, hand percussion (no drums). The emphasis is on the vocal harmonies.

AHDN is my favorite Beatles album. Not necessarily because it has the "best" songs (although a few of them truly are, IMO) but because it flows so great, and because it comes from the time when they were just approaching the heights of Beatlemania but were still fresh and unspoiled and hungry. The sense of youthful joy, energy, ambition, and confidence is palpable. It's something that couldn't be manufactured, no matter how "good" the rest of their work is. Everything was clicking for them in those days.

I'd give everything a 9 or 10 out of 10, except probably "When I Get Home" and "Any Time at All", which are a point or two lower for me.

 

Love Tell Me Why, surprised at some of the low ratings here. Never need to hear CBML ever again.

I think that it is worth mentioning that a fellow Canadian ranked the album earlier (I think on page one or two) and put 'When I Get Home' as the album's least appealing track. Yet here I have it at the top of my list. I think that this speaks volumes about the Beatles' ability to put together records that appeal to pretty much everyone in some way or another.
