Yeah, I don't understand the dislike of this album either. So what if it has a few covers? They're pretty darn good covers. And the original songs are some of their best.

 

The Capitol Albums Vol 1 remasters of these songs (Beatles '65) sound especially good. That's become my go-to whenever I want to hear some early stuff.

 

Yeah, I'm really glad I sprung for those two Capitol album sets despite already owning the 2009 box set. The Capitol Albums remind me of listening to the albums as a young kid. It's the sound I remember. The 2009 box set often sounds flat.

I have mixed feelings about this album, but I definitely feel that many under-rate it. It's full of good songs, but somehow it doesn't reflect they joyfulness which brings the magic to many of their early records. I've always liked the UK cover design. However, the one I grew up with was the horrible Australian design, with photos from their Australian tour slapped onto a bright yellow background. In the words of Dr.Phil: "What were they thinking?"!

Wow, that yellow cover is bad! Indeed, what were they thinking. They did have art designers back then, right? This looks like a kid in grade school slapped it together. Their heads are practically cropped off at the top! At least Ringo got a nice big pic.

Now this one I'm going to give a 9/10. It would be a 10/10 if not for Mr. Moonlight. I give it a 2/10....all the rest are 10/10 in my book. This is my personal opinion, your mileage may vary.

Kansas City is the only real dud on the album. You can't do Kansas City without the "I Might Take a Train, I Might Take a Plane" break. I mean come on, this tune is a major standard and the Beatles cut their teeth doing this type of crowd-pleaser in Hamburg - which makes all the more curious how they could leave out that key section. (And don't nobody say because it is medley'd with "Hey Hey Hey" they get a pass. A "Wipe Out/ Pipeline" medley would not excuse anyone from leaving out the drum solo)

The overall rating probably should have averaged out more to a 5, but I never have any desire to listen to this album, so from that standpoint even a 4 is being generous in my mind.

 

Well said. As a kid, I was really intrigued by Every Little Thing and What You're Doing (on Beatles VI here in the US). Those two really felt like a step forward. But at that juncture the cover versions felt perfunctory, for the most part.
