    Hi,

On my way to upgrade one of my Iron Maiden Black Triangle cds into another in a better condition, I have noticed that many of the discs that are currently offered on some famous online bidding site seem quite suspicious to me.

If you do a quick search with the words "iron maiden cp32", you will find out that:

    • The quantity of those albums currently being for sale is quite high, considering their rarity.
    • Some of them are available in a pristine condition, OBI included. Which is quite odd for a 30+ year old cd.
    • Lots of the sellers that offer albums in such a great condition are from Russia, Hong Kong, South Korea and China. Which does not make much sense to me, as I would expect most of the sellers to be located in Japan.

In addition to that, take into account that those "suspicious cds" that are being offered are always, either too cheap to be true ($20 mark), or priced way over the top ($200 or $300 mark). That differs a lot to the prices they are accounted to be selling for at places like discogs or the classified ads here.

Though not Black Triangle cds - if you do a quick search, you will find out that you also see this happening for the Queen CP32 cds and Beatles CP32 cds...

    My concerns here are:

    • Is there really a market for that? Does it actually make sense for somebody to take the time and effort to counterfeit an obscure and rare old pressing of a cd? I mean... it is not a Gucci bag or a Rolex watch we´re talking about here.
    • Who is buying those? If you take a look at some of the sellers, they are guys with thousands of possitive reviews. Some people might be buying them.

PS. I don´t know if it´s permitted to paste links from bidding sites here, so I´ll avoid doing so.

 I just checked and I think you're being overly concerned. None, and I mean none, of them were of the phony nature. It's just a sign of the times regarding CD's. Some will hold their value, like Powerslave, and some just want to be moved quickly by their owners.

For instance, these look suspicious to me:

Iron Maiden / The Number Of The Beast JAPAN CP32-5108 3200YEN 1A1 Rare!!!!!! *Z | eBay

    Iron Maiden / Somewhere In Time JAPAN CP32-5158 3200YEN 1A1 Rare!!!!!! *Z | eBay

IRON MAIDEN Seventh Son of A Seventh Son JAPAN 1st CD CP32-5610 W/OBI 3200YEN | eBay

Plus, the number of these items being offered by Russian sellers doesn´t smell good to me either.

The clear hubs, matrix band width and matrix font tell me those you've posted are the real deal. Those are the identifiers between the real and the fakes. A CD-R can not have those identifiable characteristics.

Yes. I know. But my guess is - would they able to replicate those matrix numbers? They could be made using "legit" CD pressing machinery and still have a HUGE profit.

I mean, we´ve seen examples of the counterfeit industry of those countries replicating more complex things than a CD...

I could be wrong, of course. But I something here makes me reluctant to risk my money on those.

Too far of a reach for me my friend. The profit margins just don't add up with a failing technology like CD's. You can't be painting with such a broad paint brush based on guesses. I've purchased a lot of legitimate rare pressings from both China and Russia. I'm guessing that I'm fortunate that collectors are afraid of them which leaves more options open at some pretty reasonable prices for me. :)

I wouldn't have thought this possible until I purchased a counterfeit Midnight Lightning (Jimi Hendrix) CD a few years ago... there's no way in hell this album should even have enough demand to make someone want to counterfeit it. But I got one. Messaged the seller. Gave me some pushback but eventually agreed to a refund. Which I ended up not taking. Something about the novelty of owning a counterfeit of one of the worst Hendrix CDs ever released, made me realize it was worth the $15.

That's one thing I don't understand with Discogs, why they allow clearly counterfeit/pirate products to be listed on their website. It's like they are helping counterfeiters manage their stock/products.

Bootlegs are a different situation ...

It's because Discogs was first and foremost a cataloguing site. It was meant to be a database of releases and their variants. So it's within their scope to document counterfeits and bootlegs. But you'll notice they've begun blocking such releases from being sold via their site. You'll still find some available but that's only because they haven't gotten around to blocking them yet.

And to the OP: I agree with @Dave - those Iron Maiden CDs you linked to look legit to me. You can counterfeit a CD but you can't counterfeit a specific manufacturer's pressing style.
