Is an hour of West talking about Coltrane.

I have a Coltrane dvd i think has narrative. Not sure what that is. Will look for it later.

Wow...I kind of like Cornel West, and I definitely like Coltrane, but I don't think I can watch an hour of the former talking about the latter! Thanks, though...I remember West saying he doesn't get the late stuff, but he seemed to suggest that was his own fault or something....maybe I just saw a clip and mixed it up with the doc...

Anyone else have issues ripping The Heavyweight Champion? They play fine in a CD player, but the FLACs are all crackly. Did this set have copy protection nonsense?

I'm by no means a Coltrane expert but I really love Naima (Take 1) off Blue World. A little gem.

    Such a beautiful song.

Many, many years ago, in the days of MSN chat, I really liked a girl and, one day, she used the nickname "Naima". I almost collapsed.

I’ll have to double check but I think my set ripped just fine. Which tracks and times are giving you problems?

Out of curiosity, what are generally considered the best of the posthumous Coltrane albums?

Multiple files, but Central Park West @ 2:49 would be one.

Speaking of Heavyweight, I saw that vinyl box at a local shop last weekend. Cool to finally lay eyes (and hands) on it. I think they wanted $250. The jackets are fine but not tip-on.

Yesterday while working I listened to discs 1 & 2 of the Complete Vanguard. I swear it's Coltrane's finest moment. The whole thing is just excellent! I'm not a fan of Dolphy's solo stuff, but I have to admit he was an outstanding player, and a great foil for Trane. Imagine what it would have been like to be there!

Thanks everyone. The Apple/Pioneer slimline DVD unit was the culprit.

np: Summertime, disc 4. This box sounds great, I did a quick comparison to my 80's CDs and it's more present and cleaner.

Hello, do you know how the CDs compare to the vinyl version? I love CDs and would hope they are first class, but given they are also available on streaming I haven’t yet made up mind about buying them.

I’ve been listening to the 58’ prestige recordings - they sound incredible - I wish I knew more about the mastering. I’ve been streaming on Spotify, tempted to buy the digital files or buy the CDs (expensive in Germany and I saw reviews about the sleeves being annoying). The vinyl doesn’t seem to make sense as they as from digital files.
