Damn, that does sound like some lame Buzzfeed headline..anywho

    pick a jazz album from the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's

Choosing one is hard as fook

So... since I am a vocal fan, I'm selecting the following (and I'm throwing in one for the 2000's too!):

    50’s: Helen Merrill

60’s: Nina Simone: The Best Of Nina Simone (Phillips)

70’s: Esther Phillips: From A Whisper To A Scream

80’s: Carmen McRae: I’m Coming Home Again

90’s: Holly Cole: Don’t Smoke In Bed

    2000’s: Claire Martin: Perfect Alibi

I'll play but I'll bend the rules to go back to the pre-album era with some anths and come up to date; of course literally leaving 100s of great and personally beloved records on the table

1920s: JSP Louis Armstrong Complete Hot Fives & Sevens
1930s: It's OOP, and it includes some stuff from the late '20s, but the RCA/Bluebird CD compilation Early Ellington is maybe the best single-disk collection of early Ellington.
1940s: Charlie Parker Savoy & Dial master takes
1950s: Relaxin' with the Miles Davis Quintet
1960s: Ornette Coleman - Change of the Century
1970s: Arthur Blythe - Lenox Avenue Breakdown
1980s: Muhal Richard Abrams - The Hearinga Suite
1990s: Randy Weston - Spirits of our Ancestors
2000s: Brad Mehldau - The Art of the Trio 5: Progression
2010s: Vijay Iyer - Break Stuff

I'll play, but I'll cheat, too. I tried to limit it to instrumentals, but I had to have Getz/Gilberto.

1950s: Thelonious Monk - Brilliant Corners
Runner up: Ahmad Jamal - At The Pershing: But Not For Me

1960s: Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto - Getz/Gilberto
Runner up: Bill Evans - Sunday At The Village Vanguard

    1970s: Herbie Hancock - Headhunters
Runner up: Pat Metheny Group - American Garage

1980s: Pat Metheny & Lyle Mays - As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls
Runner up: Art Pepper - Straight Life

    1990s: Maria Schneider - Evanescence
Runner up: Marc Johnson - Sound of Summer Running

Pepper's "comeback" work on Fantasy's Galaxy label in the 70s and 80s is every bit as good, if not better, than his stellar work in the 50s and 60s. Quite a life that man had.

I wish I knew enough Jazz from 1980 on to do one of these lists. Sadly my collection falls off quickly after the mid-70s.

Just wanted to point out that on the Rate Your Music site the top rated Jazz album of the 1990s is Angelo Badalamenti's Twin Peaks soundtrack. Very strange.
